270 Weatherby Ideal uses?

Among others, I own a 22-250, 30-06, and 338 wm for hunting rifles, so I have most game well covered. I have a chance to buy a Mark V in 270 Weatherby pretty reasonable. What would be the ideal use of this rifle be? I hunt whitetail in WI and mule deer and elk in CO. I'm not looking to replace any guns, (I've never even sold one) just asking for a good reason to add one. (I've never needed a good reason to buy one before) Had thought antelope of sheep to be ideal, although the Mark V isn't the lightest rifle.
Idea's? What's a reasonable price to expect to pay for a Mark V rifle w/ redfield scope in good overall condition and 1 1/2 boxes of ammo through it? Owner bought it in late 80's. I won't know much more till I see it for myself.

Ya need a reason to buy a new rifle?  Hmmm.......how bout simply "because you can"  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D !
You said your not looking to replace a gun......well you could look at the Weatherby as just having another option should you want to not use one of your other guns.

Shame on you Shane, teasing us that way! If it is a good deal buy it (unless the budget wont allow it)~! Any thing the 270 Win can do the 270 Weatherby can do.From an occasional varmint to elk with proper loads.
  The Weatherby is a few hundred fps faster than the Winchester and eats a bit more powder. It's not considered a "target Gun" but in the right hands can give very good accuracy. Heck,I'd buy it just for the bragging rights!  jh

I know, I know.  I would think around $ 900 to $1000 to be market price if it's in nice condition and I think he'll ask much less than that.   I tried to track him down last night, but didn't find him.  I'll try alittle harder.  He told me he shot one elk with it and several deer, but just doesn't use it any more.  Seems like a good idea anyway.  I can't think of a single gun I've ever bought that needed (or had) a good reason.

My old Gun Traders Guide(95) shows $650 for one without sights and in excellent condition.No scope or mounts.Depending on stock and condition you could get a deal.

Finally got a chance to view the Weatherby.  Nice gun and I would of bought it, but the guy might go to Alaska on a hunt next spring, so he didn't want to sell it right now.  Wasn't very nice of him to tease me with a Weatherby, was it?

If I had those three rifles, 22-250, 30-06, and 338, I wouldn't be looking at any others unless I just wanted one. I can see it as a replacement for the 30-06, but it's not what you're trying to do.

Since you're looking for an excuse, consider rebarreling and rechambering into a cartridge that really interests you. It seems like a good action for a wildcat or proprietary cartridge.  

You could also use it as your "beanfield" gun. Load it up with light bullets and but a big scope on it and let it fill a niche that the 30-06 doesn't quite do. If the 30-06 is a good 300 yard gun, the 270 Weatherby with full power loads and light high BC bullets is a 400 yard gun.

Why would he want to use "light" bullets?  I suppose it depends on the meaning of "light" but the .270 Wby shines with bullets in the 130+ grain range for long-range deer shooting.  Softer bullets like the Nosler BTips or Partitions expand well at lower velocities, and they have higher impact velocities than lighter bullets like the 110 Sierra.  Using Sierra data, velocity/energy and drop at 400 yards (200 yard zero):

110 SP @ 3500 fps = 2295 fps/1286 fpe -15.8"
130 SBT @ 3300 fps = 2351 fps/1595 fpe -16.4"
150 SBT @ 3200 fps = 2413 fps/1940 fpe -16.5"

The 150 SBT has higher velocity for better expansion, much more energy and the same drop.  The big-case Weatherbys are usually more efficient with bullets in the heavier range for the caliber, but the lighter bullets will work on smaller deer.  Just for fun - Sierra data for the .30-06:

165 SBT @ 2900 fps = 2028 fps/1506 fpe - 22.1"
