Adding weight

Is it legal or illegal to add weight internal to the stock to shoot in the 10 ½ lb standard class and then remove the internal weights and shoot the same rifle in the 8 ½ lb hunter class? If legal, does anyone do this?

first, it is 10lb 2oz.  not 10 1/2 pounds...  folks will get a bit persnickety about those extra 6 ounces.
second...  as long as your rifle fits the configuration rules for the hunter class, your strategy will work.
third....  most folks shoot scores with their 8 1/2lb hunter rifle at or near their standard rifle scores without the extra weight.
to the best of my knowledge, i don't know anyone that does what you suggest.

After putting weight into my hunter gun to bring it up to the 8.5 lb mark, I think that even if you wanted to you would be hard pressed in finding a enough space in the stock to bring it up to that weight.  Especially if you wanted it to be well balanced.  Most of your weight would end up in the back of the stock.

It is possible, but I don't know if it is worth it do to the problems of having to resight in after every time you took the gun out of the stock to change the weights.

Where is it legal to add weight into a hunter gun?

I just bought a CZ 452 Silhoutte, and after mounting my optics I will be well under the 8.5 lb limit.

Is it acceptable to drill a hole in the end of the stock and add the weight that way?

Thanks.

Charley.

Yes putting weight in the butt stock is legal.  However, putting it in the forearm of the stock is better.  Weight out front helps steady the rifle.

Using a dremel tool to make some space for some wheel weights works.  Having a friend with a milling machine is nice.

As long as you can't see the weights your okay.

A couple of years ago at Raton, Troy Lawton was shooting a hunter in both  classes.  He had a weight that he hung under the stock about at the front swivel.  That is the only one I can think of that matches your question.

He added the weight to shoot it as a standard rifle.  There was no external weight when he was shooting it as a hunter.  He quit using the external weight the last I recall as it did not make much difference to him.
