PMC .44 mag Ammo?
« on: July 27, 2004, 06:12:28 PM »
I just ordered my S&W 629 Classic 8 3/8'' today, and it should be here by friday. I also just found a good deal on ammo online($13.80/for 50). And I was gonna order about 500 rounds to get my 629 broken in, I will use it for mainly plink'in and maybe some varmints. But before I order I would like to know if any of you have used it, especialy if you have used it in your 629. Is it good quality? Is it dirty? Will it shoot well in my 629? It is called Truncated Cone Soft Point 240 grain and is made by PMC. If you could get back to me as soon as possible that would be great because I would like to get it ordered in time for shooting my 629 for the first time. Thanks a million guys.

I shot a couple of thousand rounds of PMC through my 629 before I started reloading. In my opinon it's good ammo and suitable for deer hunting as well. You will notice that PMC ammo is pretty hot stuff and a value for the dollars. I've had good luck in reloading the spent brass as well.

Be Safe,
Scott

Haven't bought any lately, but I like the way the PMC "copper plated semi-wadcutter gas check" shot in my Bissely Blackhawk. Less recoil, good accuracy, 1300fps. Should get me some soon.

Catblaster,
You don't have any worries with the PMC ammo. If the price is right go for it. I have shot a lot of their ammo with no problems. In fact when i have to qualify i try to use it. Good luck..............Joe..............

Well, I haven't used much PMC ammo lately, and I haven't bought any 44 mag ammo of theirs for about 10 years.  I don't remember any problems with their 44 ammo.  Almost all of my centerfire ammo is reloaded now, but when I do break down and buy a box, I usually stay clear of PMC.  I had to return a box of 22LR PMC ammo that was so hot, it locked up my revolver, and it ruptured cases in my semi-auto.  I gave them one last try with a box of 300 Winchester mag ammo, but the primers were flattened and the cases overexpanded by pressure, as compared to other 300 mag ammo shot in the same gun.  I like ammo that performs up to its full potential, but those were a little too hot for me.  Perhaps the quality control has improved at PMC since then, or my experiences were flukes.

I have shot some PMC in my Ruger SBH .44 mag  ,, almost all the cases
cracked half way down ... brittle brass... as no other brands did this...
This is a older lot of factory ammo i had on hand for years...

I reload for my 44Mag, but sometimes I shoot all my reloads I brought with me, and decide to shoot some more. I get the PMC ammo and continue shooting. I have not had any problems with PMC ammo. I have reloaded some of the cases 5 or 6 times already without it splitting. And I load them hot. I am using a Ruger Redhawk, but I am sure you will not have any problem in your S&W629. Have fun shooting and reloading.  :D

I have a couple hundred pieces of 445 Super Mag from PMC.  This stuff has the wrong temper and invariably requires a mallet for extraction no matter how light the load.  I contacted the Dan Wesson factory and they told me they had the same problem and that I should switch to Starline brass.  No problems with the Starline brass.

Thanks a lot guys. It sounds like there was some reliability problems with the older stuff, but the newer stuff shoots pretty good. I think I will go ahead and order some. Thanks again.

like others stated, it runs pretty hot through the chronograph.   that means more recoil to you and your gun.  the smiths arent made to shoot heavy loads constantly.   were it me i would go with another brand if at all possible.
to give an idea exactly how hot i am talking, my reloads were clocking 1580 fps out of a 20 inch barrel.  the pmc of the same weight clocked in at 1850 fps out of the same gun.  quite a difference.   i typically run my reloads just a tad under max.    seeing the velocities pmc posted i am concerned about pressure and therefore avoid their ammo.

I wouldn't shoot PMC if it was free and will not reload the brass. I consider it worthless. Use it if you want but I for one will not. Just too many problems in the past with it and will not have anymore in the future.

Bill,
I don't understand you having problems with PMC. I have used a lot of PMC and never had any case splitting or any thing like that. I have found on the rifle brass i can load it as many times as i do any of the others.
Under some conditions any brass may fail, but that is to be expected.
Thats my two cents worth, Good luck.........Joe..........

Thanks guys. I just won't get any because I don't want to take any chances with this wonderful new gun or me. I'll just try a few boxes of that mild American Eagle 240gr HP stuff to start out with. Thanks

I shoot PMC and find A-ok. The brass reloads good, but the big advantage is it loads well in 1894 marlins, which some can be fussy. It's usually cheaper than the "white box hunting load" but MAG Tech in 44 mag is the best buy for me. I can't tell you on hunting with it, as I am working it out at the range and gathering case's.

PMC Mag ammo?

This week I was at the range shooting 38 specials (S&W 19, S&W 66 and a S&W 36). Ammo I used was Winchester White Box 130 grain FMC, UMC 158 lead wadcutter and PMC 132 grain FMJ.
The PMC had the widest groupings of the ammo shot and was also the dirtiest. The tightest groupings were with the Winchester White Box.

I do not like the Winchester White Box for my 22-250 rifle.

I won't be buying PMC pistol ammo anymore.

I have a bunch of PMC brass in 445 SuperMag that will stick so tight in the chambers I need to use a dowel and a mallet to get them out.  Does this no matter how light the load.  The Dan Wesson factory service department told me they had the same problem and I should switch to Starline.  Did so, no more problems.

(Any body want some 445 SuperMag brass real cheap?)

Got a couple of boxes of the 44 mag stuff when I bought the gun. They were the 180 gr FNSP. Extraction was extremely sticky. Haven't had that problem with other factory ammo or my handloads.

The only pmc i've shot is 7mm rem mag. It was loaded fairly week. But it was consistant and accurate. No problem with it sticking in the chamber either and this was in a BLR so if it was going to stick at all it would have. Maybe they're just hit or miss on quality. Or maybe the rifle ammo is better than the pistol.

I haven't shot the factory loaded ammo for years, but I know I have a bunch of brass in .44mag. and 30/30 that I've reloaded I don't know how many times.. I haven't had the first problem with it.

I just bought a box of 50 magtech 44 mags 240 gr. jsp for $13 and change. It seems to have a good rep around here. My only experience with PMC is years ago I shot them in 223 out of my Contender. About one in 10 misfired or failed to fire. My Contender was punching a good hole in the primers and no problems with other ammo.
