Bullet Holes @ 500 Metres
« on: July 27, 2004, 10:52:13 PM »
G,day from Down Under,

I've been trying to set up my 6.5 x 55 Sako for HP Rifle silhouette. To make my life easier reading the paper targets @ 500 metres, I bought myself a Swarovski 60 power spotting scope (about $US 5000.00 plus) Well I have to say it has been a waste of a lot of money as I still cant see the holes in the target @ 500 metres. With the mirage it is impossible to see the holes. (it's a bit warm here @ 31 degrees c) What about a camera with a decent telephoto lens? Do you think this will work?

kind regards

Sixty power is way too much for all but very cool days. I have no clue what 31 C is in real temperature like we use here in the US.   But if that was F degrees you "might" be able to use 60x.

I have a B&L Elite 20-60x80MM scope that will read holes that far but if the temperature climbs to the point you'd call warm as opposed to cool then about 40-45 X is really more than you can use. I find 20-30X most useftul most of the time.

If you have the ability to drop down in power do so. If not I suggest you either trade it for one you can or buy a variable power lens for it.

You might also want to think about using the shoot and see targets.
