Author Topic: Nikon Monarch Gold 1.5x6x42 - anybody have one? (Read 1288 times)

I'm at the point where I'm finally going to put a scope on my rifle. It will be going on a Rem 8mm Mauser. Does anyone use this scope? I think it will be enough magnification for an 8mm but I'm not sure. I live in an area where the longest shots will be less than 300yds and the 8mm only has about a 200yd point blank range anyway. Opinions?

I can't imagine ever needing more than 6x magnification for any type of big game hunting. So YES you should have ample magnification for hunting.

I agree with Steelhead. Six power should serve you fine on big game out to three hundred yards. I practice on various targets(clay birds, paper, steel, cardboard, etc) out to 220 and my scope is always on 5-6 power even though it goes up to 9. If I shoot from 50-100, I use the 3-5 setting.

The new Monarch Gold scopes are awesome. Crystal clear and bright. I personally highly recommend one. The only thing is I don't know why you want a 30mm tube when your shots are only out to 300 yards. The only thing I can thing of is you like the magnifaction along with the objective size, which is nice.

It was the magnification range and objective lens size that I liked about the Nikon. I was also wondering about the general ruggedness and so forth, but I suspect the Nikons are pretty tough scopes?

I got a Nikon Monarch 3-9X40 that I used last year for the first time. It held up in rain and snow and held it zero pretty well. I sighted it in in eastern NC where I live then drove 550 miles to a camp in central WV. I shot it again there and it was dead on. I haven't put it through the mill so to speak but overall, I am very pleased with it. Hope this helps.

I have one. I haven't hunted with it yet or sighted it in. I just bore sighted it yesterday, and will sight it in Saturday.

The 30mm wasn't a big deal to me. I like the power range, eye relief, and optics. This is my first quality scope, and side by side with my other scopes it just blows them away......the difference is tremendous.

I put one side by side to several other scopes at a dealers. This was during the day, so optically (bright/clear) I couldn't tell much difference between it and the 4200 or the Leupold 2.5-8. They were all great, but it wasn't a true test.... However, the points that really sold me on the Nikon was the eye relief and field of view. I wanted clear/bright optics, and felt confident that the Nikon, Leop, or Bushnell would each be fine for my hunting in this regard. The eye relief and field of view were the major factors that I had decided were important to me in my hunting and the Nikon was the best there. It fit my needs the best so I went with it.

I'll try to post again after I sight it in. I'm looking forward to that.... Hope this helps.

I for one could care less about 30mm tubes, but I will say that this particular Nikon model does interest me. Perfect magnifaction range and good eye relief. Beside Leupold about the only other scope maker that I like today is Nikon.

Question for JCM and others What is the max mounting length of the 1.5x6 Nikon Gold? Thanks.

i have a 2.5x10 monarch ucc gold with the 50mm on my ultimate it has taken quite a beating and is neck to neck with my swarvoski

My Nikon has proven to be a VERY TOUGH companion and I have never had a problem with zero on a Ruger M77 7mm Rem. Mag. If I ever find another scope that compares to it for the $$$ I will still buy Nikon.(Bushnell Elite Series are fine also) my :money:

Hey Steelhead,

I don't know the exacts, but I've got it mounted on a long action 700 and there is still some room on both ends. I'll try to get a measure on it tomorrow and let you know. It is a fairly heavy scope compared to most Leops. and it is about 11 and a half inches long. Not huge, but the 30mm does make it a little heavier. I don't think the 6 ounces or so heavier it is than the VXIII 2.5-8 is going to make a major difference to me. I believe those two are the same length.

I went ahead and picked up the Nikon at a local shop. I haven't had a chance to mount it yet but everything looks good so far.
