Remington 7600 sling mounting question.
« on: July 28, 2004, 02:53:32 PM »
I am picking up a new 7600 Synthetic Carbine on Friday.  I have scoured the internet, and the only sling swivels listed for the 7600 are the ones that utilize the a barrel band for the front swivel.  I have seen other 7600's that have the replacement forend screw for the front, bu they are not listed anywhere.  My question is:  Will the 760 swivel mount work on the 7600.  I'm just not fond of barrel band sling mounts.  Thanks!

I can't say if one would work but from experience with a 760 in a word DON'T. I puts undue stress on the forearm assembly. The swivel stud mount you describe is actually for the first generation 760 rifles and they have a solid connection between the forearm hanger and the barrel. I used one for several years on a later generation 760 and the forearm ended up with more play in it than it originally had.

doorgunner, my son now has my 760 and it has the barrel band type swivel stud. It shoots less than 1 moa from the bench. I put that type on my 7600 my son bought for me this year. If you're concerned about the barrel band slipping I never had a problem in over twenty years use of my 760. That said, I used red Loctite stud and bearing formula on the barrel of my 7600 where the barrel band is.

Barrel Bands

I've had no problem with barrel bands on several rifles. All Are Uncle Mike's of Oregon. I've used them on Winchester Model 94s, Remington 760s and 7400s. I only sling a rifle to drag deer, so I cannot claim many miles of use on this device. None of the rifles had any accuracy problems or shifting points of impact after the band was installed. The bands themselves have not loosened or shifted. They must be installed as per the instructions or this movement will occur, as I've seen happen to shooters who put them on incorrectly. Uncle Mike's instructions are well illustrated and easy to follow. I must concur with the Remington forestock cap warning. I used this type of sling attachment on a 7400 for about half a year. It constantly loosened and required constant checking of the cap for proper tightness. It even loosened just from shooting. Perhaps this is why they are hard to find now.

Another thing that you may find pleasant is that when using the barrel band, the rifle's barrel doesn't stick that high above your shoulder.  Makes walking in the woods with the rifle slung over your shoulder much easier.
