Is Cougar good eating?
« on: July 28, 2004, 06:32:58 PM »
I am thinking about going on a mountain lion hunt but dont want to waste my money if I cant eat it...I have read in books that the old mountain men considered the Catamount  very good to eat and often would pass up deer to get a big cat...any info will be appreciated...Thanks.

7magwoodsman,
To answer your question, Yes i have eaten Lion & Bob Cat and they both are good eating, There is a Stigma that people have, I think they relate to
their tabby at home, The first time I ate Bob Cat i was kinda quezzy but after a few bites it started to taste pretty good. Lion is about the same just more of it. The meat looks just like rabbit . Try it you will like it.
Have a good day Sir and stay safe...........Joe...........

oso45-70,
Thank you for your reply and I plan on my next out of state hunt to go for a lion, I have actually looked forward to a cougar hunt since I was a little kid. I understand how you could think of lil fuzzy at home and get quezzy but I think I can fight of that feeling for some good wild meat.
                                   Thanks again,

I've had it at game dinners, and it's the same as any meat-properly looked after and prepared it's good.
As for the ''kitty syndromn''I remember a few years back I had to go out of town on a business trip and we were given a travel allowance-and being  rookey, it wasn't generous. However I did find a good chinese restaurant and enjoyed the weeks meals there- it was clean, the food good and it was cheap.Sometime later I read in the paper they were charged with serving up cat in their chop suey.....of well, it was good, no matter what was in it.We have to be careful not to let our predjudices get in the way- other cultures eat cat, dog, snake, rats- and while we may recoil at that- we eat and relish crabs, lobster, and other carrion eaters. It;s all a matter of what you're used to.

when I hunted in Nevada I helped out on a big cattle ranch, in the winter the wranglers made xtra money by trapping.  when I asked them about eating game they rated the different species.  They ranked cougar as #1, followed by feral burro.  (there are tons of them in Nevada)  said it tasted like elk,or better

I didn't scratch and claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat a cat or dog....they are on a list of things I just don't choose to add to my edible list just yet.
I have eaten bear and tasted Mtn. lion (I thought it was pretty strong and gamey)...neither would be my choice over elk.
