Scope mounts for a 50 mm on a handi
« on: July 29, 2004, 02:17:53 AM »
I had some recommendations from some members on here about which scope mounts to install on my new .243 handi.  When I went to buy them the store owner recommended something different.  I am installing a 50 mm scope on my .243 and am planning on millett angle lock rings.  High rings were recommended on the board but he recommended extra high rings.  Anyone have a 50mm scope and high rings?  I don't want the scope to be any higher than it has to be but I still want to be able to cock the hammer and let it down safely.  Thanks for any input.     Andrew

I have a BSA Classic 3-12x50 mounted on my .223 Bull Barrel with Leupold #55870 rings. There is enough space to not have to use the hammer spur and also enough that the hammer doesn't hit the bottom of the scope when it is fired. Yet....it is not so high that is uncomfortable to use or to aquire in the snap shot situation.

I have a 6.5-20x50 Simmons White Tail Expedition (WTE) mounted on one of my Handi's and use the millet Angle Loc's in the high height. The fit is perfect and the rings work great....<><....

Take the scope in and see if he will let you test a couple of different rings.

All 50mm objectives are not created equal!!  Depending on the brand, and weather or not it has an adjustable objective, the outside diameter may be larger or smaller.  The 50mm designation is in reference to the diameter of the glass inside the bell, not the outside diameter of the bell.

I've got a Simmons WTC18 mounted on my .243 Ultra Varmint with Burris Signature Zee high rings. The scope AO diameter is 2.51", have ~3/16" clearance at the AO, just a little more than I need to get the dust covers on. The Sig Zee high rings are the same as extra high for everyone else's rings. You won't find a better ring than the sig zees, the don't cause ring marks on the scope thereby increase the scope's resale value and they allow for windage and elevation ajustments with the offset kit available at Midway or Grafs for $10. MidwayUSA has em on sale for $24.95.

I've got a 6x18 x 50 on mine with the reg.high rings, but the diam. of the eye piece and adjustment ring will determine if the hammer hit's it or not. I have the Ultra 223 bull and it work's with the bull barrel.  Digger

The size of the objective is not necessarily what will determine what ring height you will need.  The ocular bell of the scope is where hammer clearance will dictate ring height.  Some scopes have larger ocular bells, some have finger grooves for fast focus or power adjustment, some even have a piece protruding for power adjustment, all of this must be considered when figuring out ring height.  All of my handi barrels had ring height determined by hammer clearance not objective diameter.  Even my 32mm objective scopes require high or extra high rings to provide the necessary hammer clearance.  Your best bet would be to take the gun and scope to the dealer and see what fits right in his shop.  As a side note I have never needed extra high millets, I have a couple 44mm and a 50mm scope in high millets on handi barrels.

On my .243 Handi with a Bushnell 6X18 I had to go with Weaver Extra High rings to get clearance for the hammer spur.
