Hey, Lawdog
« on: July 29, 2004, 04:41:49 AM »
I finally got to shoot the Ruger 77VT I was asking so many questions about over the winter. I have to say I like the 25-06 a lot. At 50 yards every load was 3 shots touching (and I'm a lousy shot). The Hornady seemed to group the best at 100 yards with 2 of 3 touching every time. I shot Feds, Rems, Wins and Hornadys and all factory loads shot an average of 3/4 inch groups with my scope at 10x (I hunt with it at 4x though). I am going to BPS this weekend for their ammo sale and they are showing they have some ultra core-lock in stock. Have you ever used those? Anyone? The regular 120 core-lock seem to do quite well and of course, are the least expensive to shoot. I'm not going to handload for these as I don't really have enough time to shoot to justsify the investment. I can't find the new Barnes Federal loads anywhere yet.

Cabela's has the 100 grain XLCX loads for $29.99 a box and the Trophy Bonded Bear claw loads for $25.99 a box...with the x bullet you can use a lighter bullet from what I've been told...and you get better ballistics with them ...provided your rifle will shoot them good enough for you.

Old Cane,

The Ruger 77VT in .25-06 is a great combo and should give you years of excellent shooting.  I don't use Core Lokts in any caliber.  Tried them, don't care for the way they work on game for me.  And Mac is right about using 100 Barnes X bullets on big game.  They penetrate like a heavier bullet.  I am working on loads using the Barnes TSX bullet.  Very accurate but haven't shot anything with them, YET.  Hope to change that soon.  Lawdog
