Another 45-70 ?
« on: July 30, 2004, 01:02:21 PM »
I have been wanting to get a 45-70 Handi-Rifle for some time now. I am wondering though: does anyone have any preference in stock type, wood or synthetic. I am leaning towards synthetic, but I could go either way. I am also wondering if anyone uses a barrel band to mount their sling on. I do know that these rifles carry funny with the current placement of the sling stud. I am also curious to know what people think of the accessory barrels that are available. Are they fairly easy to change. I was thinking that a 7mm-08 and 223 barrel would be nice to have.

Swapping barrels is as easy as removing the forend screw, then the forend by pulling it away from the barrel by the muzzle end, opening the action and removing the barrel and reverse the procedure to install. Last trip to the range I took 3 barrels for my ultra varmint and shot em all, three shots at a time. Expecting a .45-70 barrel with my SB2 frame in a couple weeks. Everyone here says .45-70s are a hoot to shoot, can't miss out on all the fun....

Quickdtoo; If your 4570 is like mine,it will be a hoot to shoot. Fire the first 20 rds. of the Win. 300 gr.ammo off the bench at one setting, and the next day every time you move your arm you will hoot. I think everyone on this forum will advise you to fill the stock with lead and get a better recoil pad. Also get a scope with lot's of eyereleif,or a red dot. The only time I enjoy shooting mine is with 12gr.of unique and a 400 gr cast bullet. I sure can make big holes, and make the dirt fly.   Digger

Ditchdigger, I got my eye on all of you fella's posts for load recommendations, I ordered 100 remington cases from Midway along with a Lee loader, I'll pick up some powder and primers locally along with a manual, gonna shoot either 350grHP or 385grRN cast bullets from a lyman 457122 or 457124 molds I have. Got a S&W 1.5-6x38 shotgun scope with 5" eye relief and I'm puttin the laminated stocks from Dennis on it for a little extra weight. If need be I'll pour a lead ingot for the stock or pour it full of lead shot! Been there, done that with heavy kickers! I have tentative plans for a Sims Limbsaver recoil pad if needed or I may just take one off one of my other heavy kickers to see if it will fit with a little screw relocation. What kind a velocity are you gettin with the 12grs Unique?

Quick, my 45-70 shoots better with 405 grain bullets sized to .459".  In fact, the bullets that shoot the lights out, are bullets cast from DJ's Lee mould 459-405HB.

Let us know how those .457's shoot for you.

I thought I'd try em since I already have the molds.....how soft or hard have you been casting your bullets? I have lots of lead, both soft and harder stuff that I can use. I have always used the softest I could get for round balls for my muzzleloaders, saved the hard stuff for sinkers and whatever so I have lots, maybe 150 lbs or so....even made a 35lb drift boat anchor out of the hards stuff!

Quick, I don't know what the hardness is exactly, but DJ told me that he used half pure lead, and half wheel weights.

i use straight wheel wieghts for my 45/70 in a lyman 420 grain mold. they shoot straight (or pattern well :) ) in my gun. a friend gave me 2 five gallon buckets full of wheel weights. toss the bullets in the oven along with dinner if you want to harden them up !

DJ should probably be answering these questions since he made the bullets......

But, I think he used Lee liquid Alox for lube on the 457-405's and NRA formula lube on the 459's.

SG, that must be why your .45-70 "patterns" well, all that lead in your dinner! Seriously though, you realize that lead gives off gases when heated, wouldn't want that in my oven or even in the home, I do all my  melting and pouring outside when it's not raining, I have enough physical and mental problems without creating more with my hobbies!  :?

hi quick -

need to watch what i say sometimes !!!

i do all casting and hardening outside too, i never mix bullets and swansons. i even lead test with the strips periodically. the only problem i have seen is when decapping, the lead in primers is pretty stable i guess and collects on the table where the primers drop out, and in the tumbler too.

the patterning  thing was from a previous post made to me after i described how a new handi was shooting right out of the box :) .

thanks !

Hey guys! I've been doing a bit of jacketed bullet testing the past few nights with my 45/70 BC. I've gotten the best accuracy with the Speer 350 gr. JSP, Barnes 300 gr. X bullets, and factory Rem. 405 gr. I'll try to get a few more load tests in tomorrow. I've been playing with the COL on the first two loads. Once I get a favorite jacketed round, I'll go back to trying the cast loads.

Big Blue:

You might also give the Nosler 300 grain partition a try...I know they are a little pricey...but they more than make up for it  in the performance and accuracy department. I had great luck with them in my Marlin 1895 GS running 2288fps and 1" groups @100 yards...dropped my 10 pointer inside 5 yards from 152 lazered yards... total penatration and top half  of the heart and part of the lungs were just jelly...and you should have seen the blood trail...

Mac,
I do have a box of Winchester Supreme using the Nosler Partition bullets. I'll throw them in the mix and see how they stand up.
