Hey fellas
« on: July 31, 2004, 02:42:13 AM »
I just wanted to stop by and say hi.   :D   I haven't been on the site for a long while.  I have been fighting getting a new computer up and running after my old machine went tits up.  It's been a long summer.  I got laid off back in late April.  I have been offf ever since. :(  The money has been kind of tight so I haven't shot in months.  That really hurts. Lots of projects around the house to keep me busy though.  My boss keeps saying that he is trying to get some work for us.  But I don't put much stock in that.  I guess I will have to go and find another job.  Problem is though is that I have been working on high end trim work for big bucks for quite a while.  It seems that there is a lot of work out there but everyone wants some kid with a hammer to work for next to nothing.  I will have a hard time going backwards thats for sure.  Maybe I should just start my own plumbing bussiness instead.

What do you think?

Looks like you better add a heavy duty bug sheild to your rig before you go too far!    :)

Here in Michigan, I believe you need to be a Master Plumber (not just a Journeyman) to open your own business.
An established plumber around here, working alone, no payroll, no employees, no hassles except for the customers, can expect to clear $60-100,000 a year after expenses and before taxes. Is that what you want?
Of course, things may be different where you live, your mileage may vary, etc, etc, but this is one of the better ways to make a decent living without a college degree.
You'd make more as a general contractor hiring other guys to build houses, but you'd have a lot more responsibility and risk too.

Sometimes we need to be kicked out of one door before we get brave enough to walk through the one God wants us to go through.

Ask God and see what He thinks, then go to the wife with your thoughts.  This is for sure one of the biggest decisions you'll ever make, best to make it together.

If you decide to do it and she is not for it, that's a fight and worry you don't need when starting your own business.

I was headed that way in 1982 in air conditioning work, until I got a job as an air traffic controller.  Been there ever since.  No regrets.  It was a scary change though cause I had to drop almost $7K in pay at first  (I was only making $25K to begin with) and it was a big gamble.  It seemed God and the wife were both for it so I gave it all I had.

God bless on whatever you decide.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

A good plumber is much in demand and around here they quietly make more than most lawyers :)

Same here on this "forsaken sand spit" they call Cape Cod. First you can't get one to come to do the work, second they charge way, way over what they are worth or for what they do, and third if they do decide to honor you with thier presence they never come when they say they will, but it's usually within a month or 2 of when they say. And yes, they do make more than most doctors and lawyers here on Cape Cod. They also hide most of thier income in "cash only" jobs and then cry poor mouth!!! I'm not bitter its just that I probably should have been a plumber!!!. At least I have friends that are plumbers....<><.... :)

That's because the plumber has about 48 more points to his IQ' than any lawyer ever had!
Yet a little while and the wicked man shall be no more.   Though you mark his place he will not be there.   Ps. 37.
