I Got My .44!!!
« on: July 31, 2004, 12:00:41 PM »
I had a couple posts a while ago on what hunting handgun to get and what ammo to buy. Well when I sold/traded the 4 guns that I never use/don't like I decided on the S&W 629 Classic 8 3/8''. I ordered it tuesday and got it friday. And saying that it is absolutely SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!! is an immense understatement. The quality and lockup are unbelievable I have owned three lesser calibered Rugers(sold/traded all) and they never held a candle to the Smith, they all had rough spots and some of the beveling was uneven. The Smith is completely symmetrical in every aspect. I shot one of the three American Eagle 240gr HP 50 round boxes that I bought today. I took the first shot just to see what the recoil was like(about like someone smacki'n you mildly in the palm with a broomhandle) not too bad infact really fun, but my dad wants a shooting glove for when he shoots it(sissy). My second shot exploded a water filled milk jug. That long barrel was real easy to hit with for the next 48 rounds. I will soon pick up a holster and some more ammo. Let me know about your favorite factory loads. Thanks guys for all of your helpful opinions that helped me decide on this wonderful firearm.

Sounds like a new Smith fan to me.

If you want a true value on a S/W get an experienced model.  You will save money, avoid the political lectures, and own a gun possibly of better quality that will be worth more than you paid for it very soon (immediately if you buy it right).

Enjoy your new 44.

Congrats on your new gun. I prefer Smiths as well. I have a 6.5" version that will shoot 4" groups at 100 yards. I figure others will do the same. Put a liberal amount of oil on the working parts and dry fire it about a thousand times. You will be suprised how well the action smooths up.

Be Safe,
Scott

I have my second 629 now. I traded my first for the 629 Power Port I have now. I bought the first one in the late '80s and the second just before the S&W/Feds agreement fiasco. The second one is much better made. More solid lockup and better workmanship.

Nice going.  Those N-frame Smiths are my favorites, right along with the K and J frames, of course.  Mikey.
