I was going to call this subject''goose problems'' but it's not the geese that are the problem, it's the stupid people who think they are politically correct and the politicians who listen to them that are the problem.
Geese have proliferated and many are year round residents now in many localities.They foul beaches, ponds,parks and golf courses.Weregularly have to shut down swimming spots because of the fecal coliform count- from goose crap.That's not their fault- they have located a food source and why would they leave that?The parks board is addling eggs[ actually it is illegal to interfere with the eggs of a game bird] to cutail the population, but nothing works, and every year we have more and more geese.They are now commissioning a special ''goose poop scooper'' that is towed behind a quad to clean up lawns and fairways.
The fault is people-not the geese. Geese aren't stupid- anyone who husts them knows how gunshy they get and how they will flair if a decoy set isn't just right.Wedidn;t use to have this problem - untill we banned hunting in many of the places where geese gathered.The solution is rediculously simple- you go to a club and organize a goose shoot every fall.The hunt is not open to everyone who wants to shoot - it is only open to the club who takes responsability for the shoot and ensures the hunt is carried out safely.You could do this right on the local golf courses, and in the parks-close them down for a couple of hours atdaybreak in the fall and I guarantee you the goose population would be brought back into line and the survivors would quickly learn to avoid those places.
Geese aren't dumb- people are.
