Which gun should i buy??
« on: August 01, 2004, 03:57:05 PM »
I dont have an extreme amount of money, but dont worry about that.  Just tell me which gun you would choose.

I dont know exactly which caliber to get: .17, .22, .22 mag, .204, .222, or the .223

I mainly want it just to shoot around plink some targets........but i also want to be able to shoot squirrels, rabbits, racoons, opossums, birds, etc..

I have been to gunbroker.com and they seem to have good buys.

Which of those calibers would be best for my hunting situation....(I dont need it for anything larger than maybe a racoon or something that size, not a fox or coyote)

I saw some Remington 597 .22, on the website, and they seemed to be a good gun.

I am open to any suggestions........i have looked at the Ruger 10/22, Savage, Remington, and Browning.......I don't know which I should get.

Please help ASAP........thanx ahead of time!!

Goose, I don't consider any of the centerfire rounds to be plinkers, lest it be the .223 cuz of ammo cost. 22lr ammo is cheap, so it makes the best plinker. If you want a real accurate round, the 17hmr is the one you want, but it's not the cheapest to shoot, either, figure $8-$10 for 50 rounds on average, sometimes cheaper. If you decide on the hmr, I'd recommend the NEF Sportster@<$150, Marlin 917V@$180, Savage 93R17@$180-$220 or for a little more money, the CZ452 American or Varmint@$325-$360. They are all capable of shooting sub moa with a little trigger work, with either a drop in kit or your own fine tuning. I have the Marlin and CZ, great shooters. If you decide of the .22lr, I'll defer that to more qualified .22 owner. Hope this helps, if you have more questions about the hmr, ask away....Tim

I would stay away from the Rem 597.  Its the only firearm I have ever purchased that I could find nothing good to say about it. Well, it looks nice, but is totally undependable.

Which part of Louisiana goose? Lake Charles here.

I have one of the New York Kimbers. I had heard some bad things about them but I bought one anyway. I'm well satisfied with this gun. 1/4 inch grouops a 50 yards.

If you are around my area you are welcome to test drive mine.

Be Safe,
Scott

goose,
A CZ in 22 lr would be hard to beat.  I have yet to see one that wasn't an excellent shooter.  The CZ 452 can be had with the plain-jane birchwood stock or walnut, in either the American or european style stock.  But they all have the same action and high quality barrel.
Best,

for plinking up to 50yards go with the marlin 7000 $189,put a simmons blazer 4*16*40 scope on it they are $59 on sale. for hunting for more umph id go with either the marlin 17v $179 at walmart, or wait for the 17mach2. ive already got a nef 17mach2 but i have to shoot 17aguila shells because the mach 2 shells aint out yet. hope this helps in your poll and decision...happy shooting!

I'd recommend the 917V over the 17V if you have a choice, it comes with the dovetail mounting plus it's drilled and tapped and includes weaver style bases. It gives you more mounting options and you're not limited to rimfire rings. Rifle Basix drop in triggers are available for both, so the difference in the triggers is a wash. You might also check in at RFC for lots more info on rimfires.

This summer I picked up a Marlin 795, and I am very happy with it. It is accurate, dependable and in .22 LR, it is cheep to shoot. I recomend it highly.

Welcome Goose - the NEF or the Marlin are good rifles for not much money; if you were my brother I would force a CZ on you; you would thank me later after you shot it. I have a modest rimfire collection -Win and Browning 52's, Sako 78 and Finnfire, various Anschutz, Ruger 10/22's in different incarnations, assorted Remingtons 580 series (glad I didn't buy a 504), a Walther V Champion, some Norincos... and there is something to admire in all of them; but the best bang for the buck is the CZ; I now own 8 or 9 and will add another when the 17HMR2 rifles come ashore, and if forced to give them all up but one, I would keep a CZ...or rather 4 of them - one for each rimfire chambering...good luck deciding- such a pleasant dilemma...I like the Bushnell 3x9 PA airgun/22 scope or the Trophy 4x12 or Legend 5x15 for the money - optics are a bit more clear than some of the others, but nearly anything with parallax adj. will serve you well...

A .22 Rimfire is probably what you are looking for.  If you want a Semi Auto buy a Ruger 10/22 - no question about it.  Avoid the 597 - I bought one for my son and had to ship back to Remington because of jams.  It still would not feed when it came back.  I finally got it to work by shooting hundreds of CCI stingers through it to loosen it up and it is now dependable with regular ammo but what a pain that was.  My Ruger 10/22 is reliable and accurate from the box - not much more you can ask for in a .22

Since plinking and small game are your primary uses you really should get a rifle chambered to the .22LR so you can afford to feed it. Plinking is a lot more fun with a semiauto than a bolt gun and unless you just want a lever or pump rifle that is what I'd get is a semiauto.

The Ruger 10-22 is one of the most common and works well as does the absolutely most common of them the Marlin model 60. But I'd go with a TC Classic myself. Hey I just did this past week in fact when I picked up a new rifle for squirrels this fall. Cost me $300 even out the door.

Since you just bought the TC Classic........and I know you are an avid shooter.......how did it impress you on the range??  What type of groups are you able to shoot with it??  Is it the best band for your buck.

I read your last post and looked at the Thomp center arms website.........thats one sweet looking semi auto!!

I may have to talk my parents into buying that one for my b-day, coming up in Nov. (IF IT SHOOTS WELL FOR YOU!! HAHA)

Thanx and please keep me informed

I've not gotten it to the range yet. Hope to real soon. BUT we're blueberry farmers and my range is just a short way from the orchard so I don't shoot while folks are picking berries. They should be gone within the next week to ten days I think and then I'll get back to shooting. Normally they're all gone by now and we're closed but this year we have a bumper crop and they are still hanging on the bushes.

But the rifle has impressed me so far. Very nicely made and with a real metal magzine unlike the Remingtons of late. Feels nice and well balanced. I ended up putting a Bushnell Rimfire 3-9 scope on it rather than the 4X I had intended for several reasons which will be discussed in the review.

:D Hey there Graybeard,

Well, I see you went and did it in spite of me.

I hope the TC does OK by you, but frankly am more concerned about the young shooter.

Keep em coming!

Yup, told ya I wuz gonna. Took me awhile longer than expected but I finally took the plunge. No regrets yet but haven't fired it either. I have dry fired it and trigger is fine for me. No complaint about it on mine. How it shoots will tell the tale in the near future.

I've not had to send much stuff back to TC and of it more has been my fault than not. Still they've always made it good 100% at no cost to me other than me paying shipping to them. Even when it was obviously my fault and I told them so.

I have a Remington 572 that I practice/plink with. I say practice because I have it set up just like my two deer guns: my 7600 in .280 and my 870 in 20 gauge. Same action, same safety, and same/similar scopes. The .22 is cheaper to shoot but keeps the familiarity of the other guns fresh in my sub-conscious!
I also have an old Remington 511 bolt that I really enjoy plinking/shooting with. I’ve shot many small game/varmints with it over the years. It is really accurate.
Being a Remington fan, that’s what I tend to use, however when people ask me about buying a .22, I usually point them towards a Ruger 10/22. I had one and I traded it and I still kick myself about it. That gun was accurate, reliable, and a blast to shoot. I will have another one someday…
