Best Hammer Extention?
« on: August 02, 2004, 02:40:36 AM »
Who manufactures the best hammer extention?
I see many different types, Bellm, Virgin Valley and many more on ebay.
What should I look for? Aluminium or steel? Will the set screw damage the hammer? One size fits all? Will the selector still work on the hammer?
I will need one for a newer SS Contender.

Thanks in advance!

If you can do with out one, I would recommend not using them. Me personally, they get in my way, they come loose and you have to always tighten back down when shooting. I have 2 of them I bought from midway and have them sitting in my gun room  unused. JMHO. :D

Redhawk - I agree ...........prefer not to use one at all. But with my setup it is necessary so that my 11 year old son can safely cock the gun and uncock if needed. Otherwise I never had one for me.

Hi Pokee, I first bought a Petersons from Cabela's. It has an extension on both sides and would balance on the hammer. Then on GNBRKR got a NO B.S. deluxe SS extension, it hangs off one side. Now here's the tough part - I've never had either out of the bag. As long as you can get your thumb between the scope & hammer you don't need the troubles of slowing down your lock time & lightening your blow to the firing pin. I have seen Contender hammers broken where the extension screw had crushed into it, these hammers are hollow on the underside of the knurling. Since you are going to be competing in a "friendly" event buy two hammer springs & change it after you have some practice with that new grip.

I have two of the extensions for my Contenders from the manufacturer that isn’t allowed to be named on this board!  Several of my shooting buddies have the same extensions, except for Encores.  Among all of our Contenders and Encores, there must be literally 10’s of thousands of rounds fired with these extension in place and not a problem to my knowledge.  At least not a problem with mine.  They have never “worked” loose and they fit the hammer like a glove—No slop, No movement.  We all found that when hunting with them (Contenders and Encores) in the cold months and while wearing gloves, it was nearly impossible (and maybe dangerous) to attempt to cock the hammer when the Contender or Encore wears a ‘scope.  Allowing the hammer to be uncocked is even a trickier task while wearing gloves and no extension in place.  As a matter of fact, I just receive two more extensions for Encores in the mail the other day.  One I will keep for myself and the other one my brother-in-law bought from me.  Good-luck…BCB

I would rather learn to cock and uncock a hammer without an extension. I carry my TC's in a bandolier cross draw configuration and I would hate to cock my TC's upon holstering. I believe that is why TC quit making them.

I've been using the newer Be11m model and its been working out great.  I'd rather not use one, but i have the scope mounted back over the hammer and can't get at it otherwise.

I have 2 Encore Muzzleloaders with scopes and don't have any problem with cocking the hammer back. I have 2 Encore Pistols with 5 different barrels and several different scopes and don't have problem cocking the hammer back. I also have 2 Contenders with scopes and no problem cocking them either. I have used them in cold weather with gloves and still no problem. I just make sure I get high enough rings, so I don't have to worry about the hammer issue.

:D Hello.. As far as hammer extensions go the ones mentioned above and put out by a person named Mike  whose last name cannot be mentioned in this forum seem to be the best and the steel ones sell better for me. The aluminum ones give faster lock time. Any of them will bugger up the side of the hammer.. Check out Thompson contender Hammer Extension on Ebay and see what comes up.. hee hee hee cbagman

It is a catchy thing those Encore and Contenders.  :) As easy as it is to swap out barrels, I just like to have some frames dedicated to one barrel. I just picked up a Encore muzzleloader pistol barrel and will more than likely try and get a frame dedicated for it.  :D

Hey Redhawk1,
I am really interested in the muzzelloader pistol.  Have you fired it yet or have any data on it?  Is there any known data out there that I can look over?

I am getting ready to take the .50x209 to the range after I send this note.  Will run it through the chrono using different loads.  Will let you all know how it went.

I have not shot it yet, hopefully I will before I head out on my Caribou hunt in Alaska on the 27th. If not I will go to the range and shoot it. Also I am waiting for my 25ACP breech plug to get here for it.  :D
