Blr with non-glossy stock

Does browning make a gun without a high-gloss finish.I had a a-bolt micro medallion in 300 wsm...took it back-too glossy

They are know for there high gloss tough finish. There are a few that have sanded off the finish but it is a real hard finish.  Pretty though.

I used 0000 teel wool wet on mine, not enough to take the finish off, just enough rubbing to kill the shine. Now its kinda semi gloss.

My gosh CJ, you ruined a perfectly good finish.  Seriously, just kidding.  Everyone has their preference.  For what a Browning cost though, I am not sure I could pick up enough nerve to use that steel wool.

oh well,dont like them wooden airplane signal mirrors.Why spend the extra money for a browning and cover it with something just to hunt.Seems to me they should offer an alternative.I'd buy a BLR if it werent so darn shiny. :rain:

Acetone will take the shine off and leave the finish intact

I also did the steel wool trick.  Any gun I get with that glassy finish gets a rub down.  Cuts the glare and does not require refinishing.  Start some place not very visble and rub until you get what you like.

First,  I dont think a deer pays much attention, especially if you are not
moving,  I think a deer will more likely see your face if you turn your head in a dark woods.  Also the butt end is tucked under your arm.

When hunting in  bright sunlight and in the open I see light flash from
the barrels of rifles.  that usually occurs when a hunter shifts his rifle from his hands to his shoulder or changes his grip and waves the muzzle around.  Most times you dont see a flash if a man does not wave his rifle around.  As for the stock, I never see a flash from that.

If you are allways stalking, and a good stalker who can stalk in close
then I might be concerned.  If that was the case I would just wind
electrical tape around the back end or make some other temporary
change using tape.

I use a BLR and the deer dont seem to notice but my range is usually
around 70 yards or more.  At 25 yards or less is when I would guess a deer could notice an un natural brightness.  

Just my 2 cents but I dont worry about such things

i just remember using a shiny 700 bdl and seeing a reflection on a nearby tree,couldnt figure out what was causing it at 1st,not my watch crystal.Turns out it was my rifle stock....just like signling a plane.

When i bought my BLR, i talked to my grandpa about the glossy finish of the stock to my grandpa, mentioned to him that i might try to strip it down to look like the old Marlin .32ws he gave me (gorgeous gun) and maybe do some checkering on it.  He asked to borrow it a little ways before christmas and returned it to me, stripped, rubbed down with a waterproof brown shoe polish and checkered, exactly like my Marlin.  It is beautiful, and the most amazing thing?  He does his checkering with a pocket knife, and working in gun sales and custom building, i can tell you, it is flawless.  He never ceases to amaze me.

My Bro-In-Law squealed like a stuck hawg about the stainless barrel on his Wby UL in -06.  Like I told him, deer don't know stainless from high carbon or copper.  But he had this affliction about it shining and scarin the critters and I ended up with it at a VERY good price!

Deer and just about any game animal run from movement and scent. More often than not, a flash is apt to lock them up as they will be curious to find out what it is.  Maty be just the time you need to slap em with a good bullet.
