Gunsmith to work on Handi-rifle trigger?
« on: August 03, 2004, 02:51:49 AM »
Morning! I'm thinking about getting a Handi rifle for a left handed nephew who wants to try hunting, 'course I already want to mess around with it. I thought NEF used to do trigger work but their website sounds like they don't anymore, maybe Marlin nixed that? Anyone know a smith that would do a trigger job and get the gun back within a reasonable time frame?

Welcome to GBO!  :D  As far as I know, they still do trigger work, but it's not free anymore, they charge $20, send em an email and find out for sure. You can also do your own trigger job.

NEF will not reduce trigger pull to the 3-4 lb range unless its within the specs of the gun make and year.  They will clean and examine the trigger assembly to make sure its ok, and then test the gun's trigger pull to verify its within specs.

The trigger pull on my Handi is 7.5 lbs.  When i sent it in to get refit for two new barrels i asked to have the 'trigger' job done.  When i got it back, the trigger pull was still 7.5 lbs.  I called them and they only change trigger pull if it is not within specs for the model and year.

i've looked around areas in VA and many g'smiths say they can do a reduction to 3-4 lbs for about $60.

Keep in mind that once it is done, that work voids any warranty claim so if you need to send the receiver back the trigger will have to be put back to stock.

Handi-Rifle trigger job

:D  Hey guys, I called H&R last Friday (7-30-04) to ask about the .44 Mag barrel availability. I also asked him about the trigger job and was told that they would adjust it down to a minimum of 3.5 lbs for $20.00 if the trigger pull was less than 5lbs. He said if the trigger pull was over 5lbs they would do it for free but you HAVE to write it on the order form that you send for the extra barrel otherwise they don't automatically check it. BTW mine checks at 7.5 lbs.

Hope this helps.

That's what they told me too, but nevertheless they charged me money to clean it and find out if it was within specs.

I'm calling 'em back to complain...

Do that borg1 and let us know what they say and what they do about it. They dump on one of us they dump on all of us. If we as a group stand together and complain about their sometimes unusual billing practices perhaps their actions will be closer to their statements or promises....<><....

In early May when I was ready to send my Ultra Varmint frame in for a couple barrels, I called to ask them about the trigger job, they told me to write on the order what I wanted and that they would not set the trigger pull to below 3lbs. I wrote on my order that I wanted a trigger pull at ~ 3lbs, it came back with a 3.5lb trigger, it was between 7lbs and 8lbs originally. They charged me nothing but that was just before their price increase. I think you just need to put in writing exactly what you want on your order.

I don't think anybody needs to worry about the trigger warranty, there are only two pieces that make up the actual trigger and you can buy them from Brownell and put them in yourself.  I done my own trigger job and got it down to 24oz, it breaks as clean as a glass rod. All my hunting rifles have 24oz trigger pulls.

If some body is doing it for 60 bucks it is cheap enough if it is a good job.
The direction on how to do it is on this site under the frequently ask questions and it is a good one and easy to follow. Just go very slow by the time you finish you will be able to do it with your eyes shut. I wished I toke count how many times I put it together and checked the pull with a pull scale. That is what takes the time. Fred M
