air pressure pushes out bullets
« on: August 03, 2004, 06:18:28 PM »
Well. I got my Rem RB, put together in Florida and ship to me here in NY.  I completed my first legitimate batch of 45-70 ammo to get me on paper and break in the Douglas barrel.

55 gr of 2f, beeswax wad, grease cookie, CCI LR primer, NEI bullet, the mold says 525 but its closer to 512.

Anyway, on about 6 rounds, the bullets rose out of the case after being seated.  I could only figure it was air pressure. The other 25 were good.  Any ideas to get around this.  I used RCBS dies and put a  roll crimp on the case to hold the bullet in.  Thanks.

I have a few questions that the answers to may well be helpful later on.

What lube are putting on the bullet?

Why did you use a "beeswax wad" and " a grease cookie"?

I used Emmert's lube.

I read that the beeswax wad goes over the powder and the moisture from the grease cookie will keep the fouling soft.

if your bullet has big enough grooves to carry lube you should be able to loose the beewax and the grease cookie these are mostly used with paper pacthed bullets use a veggie or poly wad when you compress your powder and i use a news print wad(Houston Chronicle i hate that rag  )to make sure the wad don't stick to the bullet then seat your bullet to touch the wads.

wolfie6929, has it right. A grease cookie is used with a paper patch bullet. If your bullets are grease grove, then grease in the grease grove bullets is all that is needed. But the reason the bullet lifts off the powder id the grease cookie traps air. I take a long pin and make a little gap on the side of the grease cookie to let the air escape. I did the same think when I first started reloading paper patch bullets with grease cookies.  :D

OK--  I'll experiment and see what happens.

Thanks
