TamaleDolly and the 16 gauge????
« on: August 04, 2004, 12:43:52 PM »
I'm taking my daughter (TamaleDolly) to Illinois in nov. for her first deer hunt. for a gun, I chopped the barrel of a jc higgin 16 gauge down to 20" and shortened the stock and added a recoil pad...however, that thing kicks like a mule!!!  so my question is, if a pour the stock full of lead shot for some added weight, will that make it so muzzle light that it kicks her in the nose???  she's 14 years old and tiny for her age.  her 10/22 has an 11" lop.
you can see her here  www.geocities.com/missgapreteen2003
you can see she is tiny and with the expense of the trip, I really can't afford a new shotgun.
Oh, the stock on my hawken is way too long for her.
any help?????

my experience has been that shorter barreled shotguns are generally back-weighted, and that causes the gun to "jump".  My 870 turkey gun with a 23" barrel jumps so much I won't shoot it for anything but turkeys.  I'd borrow someone's 20ga with a longer barrel.  My girlfriend shoots a benelli 12ga with 26" barrel and doesn't have any trouble with the recoil (she weighs about 120 lbs), although she's never shot anything that kicks more than 3" lead turkey loads through it.

If that Higgens is a pump gun, a weighted plug can be used in the magazine to keep it from being "muzzle light".
On the 19th of April, 1775, a tyrannical government sent an army to disarm its citizens. They ran into a touch of trouble.

the 16 gauge is a single barrel..  however, I discussed it with my brother in Illinois and he's gonna let her use a mossberg youth model 20 gauge that belongs to his grandson. that'll fit her better
