Did i read somewhere you could reduce any IMR 4895 load by 60% for a reduced/plinking load?

The topic a couple weeks ago was reduced .30-06 loads.

It is NOT recommended to reduce ball-type or very slow burning powders by more than 10% for starting loads.  The reason is the well documented likelyhood of detonation and resulting damge to gun and danger to shooter.

Medium burning rate single-base powders (such as IMR/Hodgdon 3031 and 4895) still burn well at reduced pressure loads.  IMR 4895 is a particular favourite for competive target shooters for "midrange" loads, and they routinely reduce powder charges down to 60% of full-charges safely.

If there is any doubt at all about the safety of a load combination, contact your powder manufacturer or loading manuals.

I think you would be better off using a powder like IMR4759  or AA5744 they were made for reduced loads. Bulky powder that fills the case better.

Tad - Hodgedons has a formula for reduced loads in rifle cartridges.  I would suggest that you go to their forum or their web-site for that information.  Better to get it from the horses mouth, so they say.  HTH.  Mikey.

I have fooled around with reduced loads quite a bit.  Accurate powder has reduced loads for almost every cartridge in thier book ...usually using XMP 5744.  I have used it a lot...even for my Ultra-Mag.  168 gr Hard-cast, less than 1600 fps, and no signs of excess pressure or problems. The Speer manual also lists reduced loads with 5744, IMR 4198, and mostly  SR 4759 powders.  I would follow a precise recipe for starters...there are a lot of published loads in the books and these are tested and considered to be safe.
....make it count

Hodgedon has reduced loads listed under "youth" loads on their web site.

I have not seen that said for IMR4895 but hodgdon does list that for H4895 in their documentation. http://www.hodgdon.com/data/youth/index.php
