I use carb cleaner but brake cleaner would probably work.  These type cleaners are usually a mix of acetone and mineral spirits. They will destroy the finish on a stock but will have no effect of blued steel other than to totally remove any oil or other rust protection.  It is vitally important to protect metal surfaces so cleaned as soon as is possible.  WalMart sells the carb cleaner I prefer for less than a dollar a can...but beware there are rumors about(I've not checked) that the acetone will damage the plastics used in the frames of some poly guns... Test a bit before extensive use...  Remember that oxphoblue will work thru a little oil..
