The Best You Can Do
« on: August 07, 2004, 03:22:31 PM »
I'm convinced that I have my .223 Ultra shooting as good as I can shoot it. My eyesight is not what it was, and I don't really think I can hold a rifle as steady as I once was able. I have been able to shoot .5" three shot 100 yard groups from the Ultra Varmint, and don't think I'm capeable of doing better. I'm using Hornady 40 gr. V-Max moly coated bullets over 28.0 gr. of BL-C(2) for about 3600 FPS. Hey, best is best, I may not win a postal match with these groups, but I can still cap a few groundhogs, so I'm happy.

Big Blue, I see no reason to complain about that, sounds like a good shooter with a good shootin' iron to me. I enjoy accurate rifles. I have in my life owned and shot a few highly accurate rifles. A writer named Woodman may have come up with the best single test of accuracy I have ever heard of. Mind you, he is working with a pistol at 15 yards, but the says a gun that will hit a12 oz beer can on every shot is a very accurate gun. I'm inclined to agree. A beer (or soda for that matter) can offers a target that varies from a simple 2" circle to a 2"x 6" target and most everything inbetween those dimensions. Try it out. It is quite a test of both the shooter and the gun and is quite informative. If you can consistantly hit it, at a range that is comparable to that you expect to hunt game, you, your gun, and your load is very good.

Big Blue:

1/2" 3 shot groups is nothing to sneeze at...heck if everyone could do that it wouldn't be any fun now would it :-D  You would be surprised to see how some of the benchrest shooters get such small groups consitantly every time they pull the trigger.....not to mention just how much they have spent to get there too

Only you know just how far you can go......but remember...

Sometimes when you think you have reached your limit and done your best...a small break away from what your doing, breathes new life into it,and you can do much more than you thought....
