Need opions before I buy
« on: August 08, 2004, 01:50:04 PM »
I will be buying a gun for CCW in the near future. I was going to buy a Tarus TI 357 wheel gun till I went to the Tarus section on this web sight and read about all the troubles people are having with them. I decided to stick with what I know. Some version of a 1911. The two guns I am looking at are the Para Wart Hog in 45 acp and the Kimber Ultra carry stainless with night sights in 45 acp. Just reading about them they both seem like good guns but I would like some opinions from you experts that don't stand to make a profit off my decision. Also I was thinking of carrying which ever gun I buy in a Thunderwear holster. Any opinions on this product. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I shoot a Kimber Pro Carry and a Para CCO. Both guns function extremely well, shoot to point of aim and are accurate. I’ve heard some complaints about Para guns but from my limited experience with them they are as good as the others. The warthog has a wide body grip frame which I don’t believe would lend well to deep concealment such as Thunderware. If you decide to go with the Para I would recommend making sure the one you choose has the X-extractor

Be Safe,
Scott

PaulS:  of the two handguns you mentioned I would lean toward the Kimber because it is a tradional 1911 single action auto, and I don't really like the DAOs.

As for holsters - I think if I saw a man reaching down into his pants as I was approaching him I would either have to tell him 'no thanks' or probably just run the other way - in either case you wouldn't have to worry about any agression from me (lol).  There are a lot of good holsters a feller can use to pack a 1911 - I prefer an inside the pants holster but I also prefer military and not sharp target sights on my carry guns.  I think Kimber produces a lightweight or aluminum frame Commander type model and that would be my choice.  Yes, it will recoil a bit more than the full size frame will but a set of heavy duty recoil springs from Wolff will take care of that problem for you and the lightweights are very easy to pack around all day long.  HTH.  Mikey.

Kimber Ultra Carry in a IWB or a IWB tuckable. I don't own one, but have a friend who does. Great little gun, light, reliable, super accurate, and chambered for a serious cartridge. My limited experience with Para compacts has not been all positive. I have a stainless steel Officer's 1911, the size is good but wayyyyyyy to heavy for me to carry concealed. Remember, the weight of a CCW is as important as the size!

i have never shot a para anything.   i have had a whole lot of pistols and shot even more.  after i handled a kimber (and then immediately bought it) all the others have paled in comparison.   not to slam the para, but i dont think you can go wrong with the kimber.

Thanks gents for all your replies. When your spending the kind of cash these guns cost these days I have to know I'm buying something that I'm going to like. :D

Stay away from the Para. I had a Para Ordnance Carry and it was a total heap of junk.
Kimber is ok if you get a good gun. Heard horror stories related to their warranty services. Para on the other hand has a good rep for their service.

I love the Kimbers I own, and find them to be excellent in both performance and finish.  If you want the Kimber, I suggest the Eclipse model as it is the only compact Kimber with the Steel frame.   I guess alloy is ok, but steel is my choice.  Plus the Eclipse is one of the most beautiful .45s out there for under 2K$

Paul S,
Have you given the Springfield armory ultra compact 1911 a good look?  Thay are comfortable, compact and powerful.  Spring field also makes a cheaper version in a compact, it is heavier!  My 2 cents.
