.17 Sportster Problem
« on: August 08, 2004, 02:39:55 PM »
I picked up my Sporster a few weeks ago, but really got to do some serious shooting this past week. I'm very happy with the accuracy, trigger pull, and fit and finish of this rifle. The one problem that I'm having is with misfires. It only happens about every tenth shot, but is annoying and shouldn't be happening at all. Sometimes, after waiting a minute, all I have to do is open the chamber, and rotate the bullet, then it will fire. I'm not sure if this is a ammo problem, but don't believe it is. Does anyone have any advice, or have experienced this same problem?

Don, you may have the same problem with yours as Scatterguner had with his sportster. He ended up sending his back to NEF for the fix. Might check out this thread for some last resorts before you return it.

Tim,
Thanks, I did remember reading that post, but not the end results. I did clean it thoroughly, and oiled it up. I'm leary of taking the action apart, for fear of voiding the warranty. I have done trigger jobs on my other H+R/NEF rifles so I have a pin, and some experience, but why mess with something the factory should have taken care of? I'll give it one more try and if it still misfires, I'll go back to the dealer and see if he'll simplify the shipping process.

Kind of bums a guy out when a new gun comes from the factory with a defect, then have to go to the trouble of sending it back and waiting for who knows how long.  :(  Hang in there Big Blue.

Sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you. I haven't had problems with any of my other H+R/NEF rifles, so I was due. The only things that ticks me off, is the ammo spent sighting it in, and now I have to remove the scope to ship it back. It wasn't even fun with the misfires, but it was accurate when it fired.

big blue -

pack it up, ship it back, and they will fix it.

it was really frustrating for me, i waited about 4 weeks to get my 17 sporty and then it mis-fires. i went through boxes of hornady and cci, cleaned it, scrubbed it, talked nice to it, pointed it towards mecca, and it still misfired. the dents in the rimfire rim were really wimpy, the dents my my 20+ year old marlin 60 makes are deep and very well defined, the sporty, shallow and inconsistant. it went back and within a week, or so, my 17 was back and no misfires !

sorry to hear about it !

SG,
Thanks for the advice. I'm done messin' with it. I got back today, from a weeks R&R, and will call them this week about returning it. I don't think we're alone in this problem, form what I've been reading elsewhere, there seems to be an epidemic of .17 missfires with these NEF rifles. I must say I was impressed with it's accuracy and will look forward to a good working model.
