270 handi loads
« on: August 08, 2004, 04:48:12 PM »
Decided I will be deer hunting with a synthetic stocked 270win handi rifle and was wondering if anyone has any proven loads for this setup. I'm going to try H4831sc between 55-57 gr.  to start, with Sierra SPT 130gr. around 3.300" OAL.  Any suggestions or wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks to all who reply.

At 57 grains of H4831sc...you'll be a couple grains shy of the max loading as per the Sierra 5th edition manual....their starting load is 52.1 grains of  H4831...your C.O.A.L is the same as theirs...they are using Winchester Brass trimmed to 2.530 and using a Winchester WLR primer.

Their accuracy load is using RE-22 at 56.7 grains....and their hunting load recommendation is again using RE-22 at 58.2 grains

I always got great accuracy using IMR4350...Remington cases and Winchester primers and Hornady's 140 SPBT...my best group with that out of a Winchester Westerner was .291" @100 yards...it wasn't the max loading for it neither...but running right at 2850 fps.

Good Luck with it

Interesting that you would ask that question now. I got up to 58grs H4831sc and started having sticking cases and an occasional breech open. I had decided to backed down to 57 grs but when I got home I checked the brass length and found that even though I am neck sizing my brass had grown too long. NOW I am wondering if it was the untrimmed cases that were causing the pressure and not the load. I am still going to load a batch at 57 and if no problems I will start bumping it up 1/2 a grain at a time again.

Taylor, let me know how it goes for you. You wouldn't happen to know what kind of velocity you get around 58gr. ?

I.m not going to quote a powder charge cause all rifles are not the same.  OTOH, with lot's of .270 fiddling behind me (don't have one anymore but will add another soon  ) I got the best accuracy and balance shooting RE19 under 150 grain bullets.  They were hitting right around 2850 fps according to my chrono.

An accurate load with a 150 grain Nosler Partition never needs to be tweaked if you decide to go after elk or antelope, etc.  I know, 130 is the classic long range flat shooting bullet, but if you do some real life comparisons you'll find that the 150 is just as at home on the prairie as it is on a treestand for whitetails.

OTOH, I'm known for being opinionated and crochety too :)

I am getting 0.75 inch groups at 100 yards with my .270 Handi using 130 gr. Winchester power points.  I bought the box when i first got the handi, just to get some cheap shooting in (after i polished the bore), and i was amazed at the accuracy.  I've fired several 3 shots groups with 0.75 +/- 0.1 inch group size.  At $14 a box in my area for the Winchesters, that's plenty good accuracy for the price.

Ås an aside, i picked up the Gamekings at Wally world for $8 a box as they were last years' rounds and are being discontinued?!  They have about 7 boxes left at my location in VA.  These bullets should be similar ballistically to the Winchesters, but with a better bullet than the former brand.
