Here are some more we've come up with.
1. West End Kid
2. West End Billy
3.. West End Willy
Why West End you ask? Wal I wuz razed in a section just west of Anniston, AL in Calhoun Co. back in the late 40s and 50s. It was called that becausse the west end of the run for the trolley ended there.
About as tough a neighborhood as a kid could have been raised in it was. I can think of only about two other of the boys within say 4-5 years either way of my age that didn't end up in prison on one charge or another and most on murder charges or dead. My friend and running buddy from those days was one of them. The other was an older fellow by several years.
I was generally called Billy the Kid in those days and was a pretty touch scrapper but never got astray of the law. Always had a gun of some sort with me most everywhere. Heck I even toted one to school on occasion, either it or a switch blade knife. Dunno why other than it just seemed the thing to do as I never used them or had any intention of it. Just part of the tough image I reckon. Anyway didn't none of the others mess with me so I made it thru just fine and still have until today.
So I can see me building a story around something like that. Ain't got any connections to anyone west of the MS in my family history that we've found so can't use anything from there. But I'm betting I could contoct a yarn about the pard with either of those names and the tough times he grew up in.
Of course I like that Gray Headed Stranger Faye came up with also and Older N. Dirt is something I've long told folks I was. Two days older in fact.
