Help Give Graybeard an Alias!
« on: January 16, 2003, 12:34:17 PM »
Seems GB is coming around to the cowboy way of shootin' an' I saw on another post that he's frettin' over an alias. Maybe we can help him out here. I'll start off with 3 possibilities.

1. Older N. Dirt
2. Dirty Neck Hickey
3. Waylon Upyorn

Anybody else got any ideas?  :P

Wal Big Ed I called SASS this afternoon and confirmed what I already suspected. Graybeard is already taken so I'll have to come up with something else to get a SASS#.

Old Cane, now that ain't sich a bad one. I do have both Creek Indian blood in my family.

Mrs. GB suggested I use Gray Headed Stranger as a take off on the Willy Nelson Movie by that name she just happens to be watching as I type this.

Problem is, big ed, there already is a Graybeard, in Californa.  SASS won't allow duplicates, or even sound-alikes....  I got "Flint" because I joined YEARS ago, member # 976, and I don't know how, now with pushing 50,000 members that anyone can even think up a new one that hasn't been taken.

Here are some more we've come up with.

1. West End Kid
2. West End Billy
3.. West End Willy

Why West End you ask? Wal I wuz razed in a section just west of Anniston, AL in Calhoun Co. back in the late 40s and 50s. It was called that becausse the west end of the run for the trolley ended there.

About as tough a neighborhood as a kid could have been raised in it was. I can think of only about two other of the boys within say 4-5 years either way of my age that didn't end up in prison on one charge or another and most on murder charges or dead. My friend and running buddy from those days was one of them. The other was an older fellow by several years.

I was generally called Billy the Kid in those days and was a pretty touch scrapper but never got astray of the law. Always had a gun of some sort with me most everywhere. Heck I even toted one to school on occasion, either it or a switch blade knife. Dunno why other than it just seemed the thing to do as I never used them or had any intention of it. Just part of the tough image I reckon. Anyway didn't none of the others mess with me so I made it thru just fine and still have until today.

So I can see me building a story around something like that. Ain't got any connections to anyone west of the MS in my family history that we've found so can't use anything from there. But I'm betting I could contoct a yarn about the pard with either of those names and the tough times he grew up in.

Of course I like that Gray Headed Stranger Faye came up with also and Older N. Dirt is something I've long told folks I was. Two days older in fact.  :)

Shore nuff is. I spent 30 years at the depot. Finally made Division Chief before retirement. Mighta got another grade iffen I'd stay until my planned retirement date since they raised the grade of the job I retired from a couple years back. But I shore am glad I retired and got out to enjoy life rather than keep on working.

West End is just down the road from the depot near the Monsanto Plant where all the PCBs were spewed out on us for about 40 years.

Britt, I'd almost bet money that one's taken already. I had considered it but figured it was bound to be taken just as I knew Graybeard would be.

The Gray Stranger.  You just about came up with that one yourself.  It's got a good mysterious ring to it.  Sort of like the Gray Strider feller from the Lord of the Rings book.

West End Kid sounds cool as does West End Willy, but what about Marshal Graybeard? Its different enough that it might work. Anniston Outlaw, as was mentioned earlier sounds good too. Or Dixie Bandit? Or, even The Outlaw Graybeard? :D

What about adding another name to Graybeard?  Like I did with the name Ranger.  This way he could still use Graybeard in his moniker:  Graybeard Rebel, Bama Graybeard or the like.  SASS is getting to the point that very few single names are left.

OK we can stop trying to think of names.

I will not be joining SASS. They just don't their act together and I want no part of them. If I can shoot locally without joining fine. If not fine too.

I asked for a name clearly in accordance with guidelines on the page about joining and was told no. She took it up with her supervisor who not only came back and said no again but said I had caused them to relook the name already given to someone and they are now gonna go take that one away also.

That's enough for me. None of the 6-8 names I offered are acceptable even tho clearly in line with the guidance printed on the website.

I will shoot as long as the local clubs will allow me to do so without being a member of SASS. If I need to join the local club but don't have to join SASS that's fine with me. But I'm thru with trying to get a name from SASS.

I followed their example on the membership page completely and still was refused. They said that Graybeard is taken by a life member (obviously one with a LOT of clout at HQ) and that word can't be used by anyone else in their alias. Strange that their example used the word Ranger and gave options for that. They just can't be banning the use of a single word like that and expect to keep growing if folks can't use any single word that is in someone else's alias.

I don't really think that's it. I think this individual whomever they are just has the clout at HQ to prevent anyone else using that word in their name. Like I said I was told they had already issued an alias to someone else using the name Graybeard as a part of it and now that person will lose his alias as a result of me calling and trying to use it as part of mine.

You don't need to join. They like it if you do. I don't know. I did cause I thought I should I guess. It's like thinking you need to join FFF or you're not allowed to buy fly line. You can check here http://www.pineywoodsplace.com/aliases.html but this is not all, not even close these days. I see what you are saying and I too have had my fill of the SASS office. They aren't always sure if that hole is in the ground or what it is.

What really sucks is someone signed up today as "Charlie Graybeard". Maybe they thought it was you. I did at first. And you shouldn't have to be a SASS member to shoot local matches.
