Shell Holder on Lee Press......Help
« on: August 09, 2004, 03:14:43 PM »
Newbie.

I mounted my lee press (lee anniversay kit).  How do I put the shell holder on.  The instructions that come with the kit are terrible.  I don't see how this mounts.  I see the C type cotter pin but don't know how this would hold the shell holder on.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

You slip the nub into the slot in the top of the ram.  A spring holds it in.  Just make sure your not trying to use the Autoprime shellholders in the press.  They have no nub, thus will not go on the press.

Steelersfan,

I, too, am a beginning reloader.  Did my first 78 reloads last Saturdayand it was very satisfying--can't wait to shoot 'em.

There are two types of shell holders as was said above.  The one for the press has a foot on it with a slotted groove that will slip into the area above the spring clip--it just slides in.

The other type without the foot is probably the one for your hand primer press if you have one.  They are both somewhat caliber specific but one has the foot while the other does not.

A friend loaned me a Lee Anniversary Press to get me started.  It worked fine but I can see why they are inexpensive.  Just enough features to whet your appetite so you will want to buy a press with more features.

One other tip, mount the press over a hole where you can put a bag underneath to catch the falling primers that are being removed.  Otherwise you will need to mount and dismount it because the primers go inside the press when they are pressed out.

Other than that, have a good time.  Hope this helps.

Mike

The shell holder that goes on the ram of the press is the shell holder that comes with the dies.

I re-read and notice you included the info it was the Anniversary kit.  The shell holders you are trying to use come in a green package, right?  Those are for the Auto-prime.  If you want to do yourself a real good favor then pick up a Lee shellholder kit (those come in a red box.)  They contain 11 shellholders and will do a good 80% or more of reloadable cartridges.  Most die makers you have to buy the shellholder seperate (not with Lee dies.)  Save yourself some money here.  The kit only costs about $13.  And dont feel bad about mistaking the auto-prime shellholders, your not the first person to make that mistake.
