41 Mag. Blackhawk
« on: August 10, 2004, 06:03:50 AM »
I currently have a 6" Blackhawk in 41 Mag. and found a 4-5/8" Blackhawk in a local store.  Handled great!  Planning on buying this one this weekend.  There isn't going to be that much vel. lost in the 1-3/8" difference, but what in the way of accuracy is going to be lost.

I Currently use the Blackhawk in tight cover or walking standing corn in late November.  Great for this purpose.  I load 210 gr. XTP's and get great accuracy.  Would it be wise to drop to a 170 gr. JSP. or stick with the XTP's?  Is the muzzle jump going to be that much worse in the shorter barrel if I stay with the 210's?  Are the 170's going to be too light for Whitetails?   Just a thought.

I have 41 Mags on both barrel lengths you ask about and a Redhawk. I sagged you forget any other bullet than the 210 XTP. The barrel does not make these bullets shoot or not. They are just the best 41 bullet ever made. I can't tell the difference in measle blast or recoil unless you go to the Redhawk or a custom barrel 41 I have.

I have the 4 5/8" barrel.  I cannot attest to your accuracy.  With my heavy load, I can hit a football size object off hand at 75 yards with the whole cylinder.  Should be good enough for a whitetail.  You should have no problems with yours.

I routinely shoot a 4-inch Taurus. I’ll concede that it isn’t as accurate as my Taurus RB or my 657 or my Contenders BUT if it was legal here to use (barrel is to short) I wouldn’t think twice about taking it hunting. Don’t worry about those five other rounds in that cylinder, just make sure the first one is put where it is supposed to go then all the worry about difference in accuracy is moot.
Love those .41s'

I'd tend to agree with oso45-70. Accuracy is a culmination of many factors including barrel length which just gives you longer or shorter sight radius.  I've got .41Magnums from an American Derringer, a S&W 657 3-inch, and 4 inch Smiths along with 4&5/8ths inch barrelled Rugers up to all three Marlin levers. They are all very accurate in their own right. The derringer tends to be a handful after a bunch of .41Specials, but the others aren't bad at all even with my hunting handloads. A lot of proper practice also helps learn about dealing with heavy recoil. Have fun with that .41! :D

I just got my Bisley with 5.5 inch barrel. Shot it yesterday. It was quite comfortable to shoot. Had a 6.5 inch Blackhawk a couple decades ago that busted my knuckles every shot. This one is great. Couldn't hit anything with the three loads I tried. Going again next week.
