Help with electronic caller

Has anyone built on of the above electronic callers. If so, how did it turn out? I like the design and the idea of building your own. I think I'm gonna try this as a rainy day project.

Frog123,

Years ago, I helped out a young friend make a preditor call (coyotes) by simply taking a portable cassette recorder/player, outdoor speaker plugged into the ext. jack and a bigger, square lantern 6 volt battery for a power source all packaged in a backpak.  The first night he tried it out he was surrounded with 'yotes in a few minutes of tape!!  Scared the bejeepers out a him!!!!!  He used it for many years.

Only thing you need to purchase is the tapes, speaker, and a large lantern battery to wire into the power supply connections.  Works like a charm.

Frog123, I've built a call quite similar to the PM website caller. The heaviest part is the speaker. I used an MP3 player for the sound source, the Azden wireless mic for remote control, and a horn type speaker for sound.                                                                                            I've owned JS tape callers, Burnham Bros tape caller, DK tape caller, and a FoxPro remote unit, which I sold. This is the best and most versatile call that I've owned to date. As far as cost, I've got a bit over $200 in it.      MI VHNTR

I just finished my home made caller project this evening. I soldered the wires to the speaker ( a speco, 12 watt, 8ohm, 5" diameter horn ) and hooked it up to my Koss walkman style tape player, plugged in the mini amp speaker and let 'er rip... First thought as I pushed the volume dial on the external amp was " Oh He**!! How loud will this thing get?? I couldn't believe it, a little 12 watt speaker and that little amp had the whole house wailing. I can't wait to get this thing out in the field and see how it does. I built this thing on a shoe string budget also. I've been wanting an E-caller for awhile but I've been too tight to come off the money to buy one for myself. Here's a breakdown of what I've got in it so far...

11.99 Pocket Speaker/Amp
8.99 12watt Speaker
2.99 miniplug cable-stripped end
2.99 miniplug cable with 1/8 plugs
2.99 additional miniplug cable- stripped end

* I "acquired" an "extra" 25 watt weather proof external speaker from the fire station at work= no charge.
* Koss water resistant walkman tape player= no charge, found it left behind as unclaimed property in a rented storage building.
* Koss portable CD player= no charge, received it as a gift 6 years ago
* Camo tote bag to hold the entire outfit= no charge, received it a complementary gift for subscribing to Outdoor Life

So for $30.00, give or take some change I've got a home built E- caller. I can't wait to try this thing out. I'll hook up the 25 watt speaker tomorrow and see how it's gonna do; then I'm gonna hit the sporting goods store and pick up some tapes and CD's and give it a field test. I'll keep ya'll posted on how it does......

Hey Norm, I got the amp/speaker and everything else needed except the speaker at Radio Shack, I lucked out and already had the part numbers for the items that I needed by looking them up on their web site at RadioShack.com. I got real lucky because the Radio Shack down here had everything in stock. A rarity in it's self. The speaker/amps part # is 277-1008. It ran me 11.99 plus a 9v battery. I was really surprised at how loud it is. If you need the other part #'s let me know. The link on the other page had some part numbers listed but they have since changed. Good Luck....

I have a 512 and the new 612 caller from Johnny Stewart the 512 has cost alot of song dogs there hide and cats and foxes too and crows i think u would be happy with the 612 there is a place look it up www.natchezss.com they have the 612 long range caller kit for 157.00 and they have the Johnny Stewart tapes for 6.86 ea that is the cheapest i  have seen on the callers and tapes any there with a Johnny Stewart  u cant go wrong               good hunting

:) I just put together my e-caller according to the list on the PM website.  I walked into Radio Shack, handed them the list and in about 20 min they found all of the stuff.  Cost was $43.30. This was with a 50 watt power horn and the pocket amp.   I took it home and pluged everything in, twisted the wires together (I'll solder them later) and I had a perfectly working e-call in 7 min.  Granted I had one of my kids MP3 players sitting on the table so the 1st noise out of it was some kind of music.  But my CD Walkman is out in the van so I'll get it later along with a couple of CD's.  But my word!  For a guy with the electronic skill of a cucumber was this ever easy.  I dont know how a person can go wrong with this setup.  Man . . . am I impressed!  :-D  :-D

I had my caller in the back of the truck today. My partner brought me a bunch of Johnny Stewart tapes to play with and copy. Our station is in a large farming area surounded by horse and cow farms. We always have a bunch of crows hanging the station. I thought I'd try to call in a few and see how well the home built caller would work. I put in a fighting crows tape and it brought in several but they landed in a tree line 150 yds away not wanting to come in. I switched tapes and put in a crow and hawk fight. In less than 10 secs we were covered in crows, with more crows coming in and joining the first flock. They were several diving in and around which would have been very "killable" I can't wait to get this thing out and try it in the field.. So far this has been a very impressive set up for no more money than it cost to build.

There is a new model called the Loudmouth coming out in February built by a predator hunter. Supposed to have replaceable chips for souunds including one you can record to. I think it is on Preadator Masters board.
