Sumtin weird goin on
« on: August 10, 2004, 04:18:58 PM »
I got a weird issue in my turkey woods and I have no idea what's goin on. Alright, last winter I thought I had spotted some turkey roosts. There were tracks leading up to trees and at the base of trees were droppings and snapped off branches and twigs (obvious sign of a roost). But when spring rolled around, those turkeys were nowhere to be found. Is this usual or not? I would appreciate some help. Thanx

Turkeys will change locations for any number of reasons.

The sexes separate and come together again in the spring and fall.

Food and climate play an important part too. We had a situation locally where my hunting buddy and I could not find turkeys in their usual locations along the tops of some ridges. This was due to dought conditions that caused them to move closer to the remaining water sources which were creeks in the valleys between the ridges.

Well...what you said about the sexes separating...do they separate over a far distance? I found what I thought were 2 roosts...within 30-40 yds of each other. Keep in mind, these roosts are along a creek and next to a field (it only has grass in the field, but I'm sure it has insects and etc.). I'm gonna try to find something tomorrow AM...crazy or not...but the landowner will only let me hunt turkey (as far as big game is concerned) and I might as well try to find em now. Thanx. Maybe you could give some further insight now that you have a little more information. I would appreciate it  :D

I don't think I can tell you where your birds went if they did leave. My reply was just meant as an example. You might find birds in the same area at the same time of the year every year because there is a good food source such as acorns around. They do change locations season to season though.

You might try going there in the early evening or morning with a crow call or owl hooter to try to get a shock gobble out of them.

OK....got one more critical questions. Turkeys in general will respond to calls year-round, right?

Yes, but not always in the same way. Again there are seasonal differences. When a male for instance is looking to mob up with a flock of males in the fall he is less interested in hens than he is in the spring mating season.

The trying to get a shock gobble is a means of locating a turkey. Don't go out and call in turkeys in pre-season that you expect to hunt. They will learn that it's you and not another turkey.

Fishman029,
There is no rime or rithum to what turkey do from year to year. I watch these turkeys here in New Mexico and i'm out with them all the time and have figgered out that you just can't tell what they are going to do. My shooting buddy hase a farm just outside town and in the fall of the year
just before hunting season we have counted over a hundred head of turkeys and the next thing you know there won't be a bird in sight. and as for as the roost tree go's for some reason they might have two or three trees in a small area that they use all the time, Then all of a sudden they are gone again. There might be some thing bothering them and causes them to move,,, who knows. I think what i'm trying to say is ( i don't
know ) where they go and why. Good luck finding them.....Joe......
