Do you buy guns just cause or to fit a need?
« on: August 11, 2004, 05:58:26 AM »
By that I mean..
Are your purchases dictated by cost, cartridge or appearance?  Or even something else?

I find that I buy mostly on cost, at first, then sift through, selling off the excess or ill-fitting.  Then I buy more specifically to complete a set or look.

What about y'all?

Hmmm? Never thought about it much.. I guess I tend to buy to fit a need. As in: I need this gun/guns to do a specific job.

However I bought my Open Top just because I always wanted one! Turned out to be a great buy because it's become my main match revolver when I compete in "saddle Tramp". 8)

I got my first set of CAS guns so I could play.  Then added to it as the right deal came along.  Right now pretty much done with acquiring firearms and will spend the year coming up shooting and hollaring.

Well BHF, I certainly can't say that I buy from need. I have 3 sets of CAS pistols, 4 CAS rifles, & 2 CAS shotguns with a 3rd on the way. That doesn't count my wife's guns. Add to that a pocket pistol & a derringer. I also currently have 4 sets of leather, + a Montana skeleton shoulder holster, & a Huckleberry rig. She has two sets with a 3rd coming soon.

That doesn't count my non CAS guns.

I buy CAS guns to fill a need......I might need another .38/357 pistol, rifle or .12 gauge shotgun!  Seriously, am pretty well set right now and happy with what I have......

However, in the non-CAS world (really Guys, there is such a place.....) I bought a 91/30 Mosin-Nagant "just because......"

I tend to purchased a gun to fill a percieved need, then factors like caliber, cost and style/fit are used to decide on models etc. Of course sometimes impulse comes into play.

I buy them just cause.  If I see a deal on a BP pistol (C&B), I get it.  Don't matter that I already have 14.  Can never have enough C&B toys.
SXS are the same.  I have quite a few, hammer & hammerless & 1 87 original that I would never sell, but still use on occasion.  Rifles - only 2 cause 44/40 in anything other than a 73 or Marlin ain't good.  Unless it be a 66, or maybe a henry.
You can never have too many toys.

Got almost everything between 51 and 92, but still missing my time period.  Still need a 66 and a hammer shotgun.  You know, I used to have 2 Rossi's in 12 and 20ga. when we first started our club.  I just don't know what I was thinkin when I decided to let them go.  :x  :-)

A lot of stuff was bought because the price was right or had an opportunity on a good trade.  I guess now I'll be buying for need.

Price dictates most of my purchases, although on a rare occasion I will see a gun I want and providing the price is in line I will buy it.
