New to CAS

Hey Y'all,

I am new to CAS and am a bit confused on all the different choices of single action revolvers.  I definately like the Ruger Vaquero, except for the warning stamped on the barrel.

How do Uberti made pistols compare in terms of performance?  I have heard that its luck when buying Ubertis, you may get a good or you may not.

I've also heard you should take anything besides a Ruger to the gunsmith.  Shouldn't any new pistol work great right out of the box?  Also what does it cost to get a clone looked at buy a gunsmith?  And how long until you need to take it back?  Sorry for all the questions but any help would be greatly appreciated!

Howdy RR,

Uh, even a Roooger wll seriously benefit fruma trip to da Smith! The sad truth is that every gun out there is purdy much a rough cob as it comes frum the factory. You buy a Colt, yer gettin' a gun from the "custom shop" (Colt don' make SAAs on a production line anymore they are strictly "custom items") and its not gonna be ready to race with!

However, Hartford Amourys line is danged good just as it comes from the plant! They are EXPENSIVE though!!!! Roogers are tough as a tank, no question about it, but they feel purdy nasty wen ya werk the action at speed! So an action job is a nessessity if yer lookin to be a major competitor with one.

The Eyetalian gunz: Well, they are about as good as a Colt frum the box fer the most part. I've been very happy with mine anyway. And before my stroke I was very competitive with them.

Best bet, pard, is to go to a shoot or three and check out the gunz that the pards are usin". If ya ask, mos' of em will let ya fondle or even shoot thiers! Cowboy Action Shooters are always ready to introduce a new pard to thier gunz!

Our club gunsmith charges $75 per gun.  He has figured out a way to work the stock Ruger pawl so it will act as a free spin one if that's what you want; saves about $30 right there.
A spring kit on will address most problems short of a major one.  If you're going to be really competitive then you will need to have a 'smith work on yours but as CC said, go out and shot some of the pards' guns.  We are glad to do it and this will give you a great idea about what you like.
One thing about the Ubertis is the very narrow front sight and the small "V" rear one.  I personally like the Ruger one but then that's just me and I'm old.
Check out Capt Baylor's site--he has a bunch of good info on CAS guns, tuning included:  http://www.curtrich.com/cowboyphotos.html

Hey thanks guys.  I'm planning on going to a CAS next week close to my home town, just to get a look what others are using.  Hopefully then I'll get a good idea of what I want!  See y'all on down the road!

Thanks again

RR, Cheyenne is right. Most pards are more than happy as a mule in a clover patch to let you try out their shootin irons. I let more greenhorns try mine than I can count.  :-D

Hey guys, One more question...

Does Benelli import Uberti firearms under Stoeger's name?
Are these good clones?

Also, does anybody know who imports the 1875 Rem. Army clone and how it shoots?

Thanks for all the help......See y'all later on!

Howdy pard,

It's become a bit MORE confusing.. ;)
Uberti makes the bulk of the CAS replicas.  About two years ago, Uberti was bought by Barreta.  Ubertis are imported by several companies that badge the guns as their own.  Cimarron, EMF, Navy Arms and Taylor's come to mind quickly.  Stoeger is a recent importer following the Barreta purchase.

I think that EMF is the current supplier of the 75 Rems.  I have a pair in 357 that are Uberti labeled.  They are good looking and good shooting!

RR, EMF is currently the only importer of the 1875 Remmies. I have a pair in 45 Colt 7 1/2" barrels & they're great. However Hartford Armory is making new 1875 & 90 Remmintons & the are remakes not repros or clones. MSRP is $1400. You won't need an action job on these babies. Hopefully they'll be in dealers stores by late fall.

This may not be direct answers to your questions but maybe it will help some.
When I started I bought 2 Ruger Vaqueros, a Rossi(LSI Puma) lever gun, and a Baikal double shotgun.
They all functioned well out of the box. The shotgun was stiffer than a board but it functioned well. The only work that was done on these guns ,over a year after I bought them, was lighter hammer springs in the pistols, and some honing on the rifle. As you shoot these guns they will "loosen up" some on their own.

The Italian clones are a little different. They need a little more "smith attention, mainly because QC is not A-1. I don't mean they are inferior to the above mentioned guns , they may need just a bit more attention
(By the way, 3 of my main match guns are Italian).

In my experience, of the labeled Uberti's, Cimmarron, or EMF, seems to be the best when it comes to fit ,finish, and function out of the box.
