Bushnell Elite 3200
« on: August 11, 2004, 11:29:33 AM »
Need a quick opinion (and I don't know if it really matters ne way). But I have a Remington Model 700 ADL Synthetic in .243 topped off with a Bushnell Sportsman 3-9 X 32. I'm looking at a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9 X 40 with the FireFly reticle and RainGuard. Now I hunt the woods of PA...so I'm not gonna need a huge 4-12 X 50 scope. But I hope to put the new scope on within a few years. The scope retails at $245...that's almost the cost of a new gun....but I don't feel to crazy buying it b/c I kno some people buy Leupold's that cost 2 times more. But am I crazy? Spill all your guts!  8)

www.theopticzone.com has the 3-9x40 3200 firefly for $192 if that affects your decision any.

That sounds great. The only thing is Cabelas has it for $229 but it has the option of getting those Butler Creek flip-up scope caps for $15 more that matches that exact scope. But I might just do w/ out for now. That sounds great. Thanx!  :P  :D

Of my last 7 scopes or so, I've bought all of them from the optic zone, and all of them have been either Elite 4200s, Elite 3200s, or Nikon Monarchs.  In fact, I'm buying a Nikon Monarch 3x-9x-40mm gloss (nikon calls it Lustre) this week.

We have a hurricane coming towards Miami within the next day or so.  I sure hope my check gets up to Jon with no problems.

I know how you feel, Zachary.  Luckily for us, we are having an unusual cool front this coming weekend here in South LA, and I think that is what is pushin her (and Charley) towards ya!  Hunker down and protect those loved ones (that being rifles, pistols, shotguns, oh... and the wife and kids also.).

It now looks like the hurricane will be further west than was originally forecasted - that's good news for me.  Plus, I just bought my parents a new house in Jupiter which is just north of west palm beach and we just finished planting about 19 fruit trees.  I could care less about the house...I just hope the fruit trees make it okay. :)

I just mounted that exact same scope you are thinking about on a R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle in .260 Rem. for use in the Bama woods which should be similar to what you'll be hunting in PA.

I've not taken it to the range yet but I like the scope. I played around with the scope and tried the Firefly feature. Seems to work well. The cross hairs are really quite heavy on this one and likely would be adequate even without the firefly feature under most hunting conditions. I'd say go for it.

It's kinda odd in that, during the day light, the cross hairs are thick, but during the night time, when the reticle glows, it seems noticeably thinner.  Have you noticed this too GB?

Yes indeed that is a valid observation Zachary. I'm sure the engineers planned it that way. The coating that glows is on a thinner portion of the cross hair than the entire thing. Real thick for easy low light viewing without the firefly but thin so as not to over power the view of target when it is needed.

Not happy with 3200 Firefly
« Reply #10 on: August 12, 2004, 08:13:58 PM »
I just had a 3200 mounted on my gun over the 4200 (which I really     wanted) because of mounting space.  I would like to know if I got a bad one because it doesn't glow nearly anywhere as well as the 4200 I had experienced in the store.  I know the 4200 glass has better coating but  my Firefly aspect is usless.  I can see the black reticle  even beyond what would be shooting hours but even after repeatingly putting a light on it for minutes at a time it will only faintly glow.  This  will only change from black to glow until dark!  If its not a dud  then it defeats its purpose for me!

My 3200 has a very bright glow, especially in the beginning.

Make sure your shining the light thru the eye piece! It wont take on a good glow otherwise.

Howler, thanks for clearing that up.  I had read on another thread to shine it from the barrel end but I was sure the directions said from the eye end.  Since the directions are at the cabin I wasn't able to check.
