In my 21" T/C factory barreled Contender, right around an inch at a 100. Hornady ammo. It will shoot others, but not as well. I use a Bullberry woodset with a modified hanger bar to fit the carbine type barrels. I have a pic of the targets, but I'll have to upload that one later.

I have a G2 barrel trimmed to 18" with a thumbhole stock and a simmons ATV 4x14x40 scope that will drop them into 3/4" at 100meters all day long as long as the wind is light. I've used it on prairie dogs out to about 225yds with great success.  KN

Been a long time since I posted this picture so maybe it'll be OK to do so again about now.   It is exhibition stocked in Spalted Curly Oak and Rosewood to my specs for a perfect fit.   Receiving it and being asked to do the field testing before the ammo was even released and available publically was a perk from being a long time friend and cohort of Fred at Bullberry (who was working with Hornady on the development BTW).   This is the first 17HMR Contender Carbine ever built, and was the field test carbine for the 1st and 2nd generation reamers.   It'll do the 2's all day with both the Hornady V-Max and CCI TNT's when its realitively calm, but has also shot a few groups well down in the 1's.   Have taken the smallish Belding GS's with it farther beyond 300 yards than I want to admit at Digger Wars, but it really shines best out to 250.   I have 3 Hummer's - 2 Bullberry's (carbine and a pistol) and a fullly tricked out Marlin 17VS that will also shoot in the 2's.   But then, I haven't heard of very many off the shelf Hummer's that wouldn't shoot at least MOA with their ammo choice.   They are lots of fun in the digger fields for sure - at DW last year about 2000 Beldings fell to the Hummers in 3 days of shooting.

JoeRobbins & Ladobe
thanks for the replies.  I'm certainly envious of your Contenders.
My hunting carbine has a Bullberry barrel and forearm(painted black) and a folding stock.  Not pretty but is nice to pack to the deer stand.
Anybody else out there care to share a picture of your .17 HMR Contender?

My 16.25" bull barrel .17 HMR is selective about ammo. It will shoot under an inch at 100 yards with Hornady ammo, either the 17 grain or the 20 grain.

With CCI's the groups average around 2" at the same range.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Thing is, I'm guessing on Ladobes part, but we both use these extensively in the field. I know mine makes all the PD trips.

I just put an Elite 3200 3-9x40 on it and did some sighting in at the range last week and it's still a shooter. I was able to get the same old MOA groups it's always shot with the Hornady 17 grain ammo. I also tried the new 20 grain XTP ammo and it game me same POI, but horizontally strung the group 2 1/2 inches!! I will do some more testing with this ammo and keep the shots with the XTP under a 150 yards for a while. For the prairie pooches, under 200 is best with the 17, but like Ladobe, I've "stretched" it out over 300 a couple of times when the conditions presented themselves.

I just put in an order for a Elite 3200 10x40 MilDot to try out on the 17 also.

One day I'll try a real high power scope and see what it can really do, but for now, it's just fun to shoot.

Without the BullBerry wood and hanger bar, it shot groups around 2-3 inches at the 100 yard line. I'm sold on these stocks and just need to build the cash fund up a bit more to try a woodset on the Encore 25-06.
