Encore Gone
« on: August 12, 2004, 06:55:24 PM »
I don't want to be rude but I had bad experience with my first and last Encore recently.
I traded a NEF Handi and a bunch of cash for an Encore .308. Got a good scope and went to sight it in. It shot fair but decided to try different ammo.
In the mean time I added a hammer extension because the scope (attached with TC mount and rings) was in the way of the hammer.
I got 3 misfires out of 20 rounds.
I got some new Winchester factory loads and had 4 misfires out of 20 rounds.
I called TC and the first thing the rep asked me is if I had a hammer extension on it. "yep, that's the problem, we don't recommend a hammer extension because it torques the hammer enough to make it malfunction".
Well that ticked me off. They shouldn't sell TC scope rings so short that you can't get the hammer back if the gun won't shoot with a hammer extension.
After they told me that I noticed that the hammer is real sloppy.
This is a brand new gun and I don't trust it enough to hunt with it. I spent big bucks for what I thought was a fine machine. I would rather hunt with a $200.00- $250.00 rifle that fires every time.
A great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.

It is really up to you to buy the proper height rings. I have 4 Encores and a lot of barrels for them, I buy all my rings to match the scope I use. If you use a large scope you need high or extra high rings. I have one muzzleloader with a compact scope and I use medium rings. I do not have a problem with not being able to get to the hammer. Also T/C does not  recommend a hammer extension for a good reason. I tried them once and did not like it myself. If your hammer is loose, I suggest you sent it back and have T/C take a look at it. I would not give up on the gun so quick.  :D

I agree with Redhawk-Don't give up on the gun so easy. There are a bunch of aftermarket accessories that will help and are not made by T/C. For instance my hammer extension is not a T/C product and works great. Do some lurking in this forum on some old and recent articles, there is so much to learn(I learn something new everyday from these guys)----These guns are great and accurate but sometimes need some TLC and the right accessories!!
Good luck

If the hammer feels sloppy, have T/C correct it. My Encore is of the first year of production(4 digit serial #) and it is a perfect example of a top shelf single shot rifle. Everything, including the action lock-up is as tight as a drum. I have used a hammer extension on mine since buying it and never had a problem. Get that hammer corrected, something isn't right.

If you do give up, I have an H&R Handi Rifle 243 laminated to trade you.  I am in the DFW area.

The word that has come from T/C all The time is that Encore hammer extensions Especially the "Steel" ones will cause miss fires on the Encore due to the extra weight on the hammer. Sorry, That is the way it is. Twyman

Texgun, the problem is not the gun but rather the hammer extension.  If you use the proper rings you don't need a hammer extension.  Set the rifle up properly and it will serve you well.

I have used a hammer extension on my Encore and my G2 since each was purchased and never an issue... Both shoot like champs...No mis-fires, nothing...Both extensions are from Virgin Valley...

A properly set up gun should put the scope right at the perfect spot so you dont have to make any kind of wiggling adjustments.  That being said, the only way, IME, to get that on my Encore is to use the lowest possible rings.  Going with higher rings then I have to rest the gun so that it is right about the level of my lower jaw gum line as opposed to the cheek where it belongs.  All this, of course, necessitates a hammer extension.  Ive had only two misfires so far, both were handloaded ammo that might have been my fault   .  Factory fodder.....no problems yet.

You must have some really low rings. I have plenty of room between my leupold with medium rings and hammer.

They are Weaver, low, quick detach on a standard Weaver mount.  But Im using a BSA shotgun scope.   With the scope set back to proper eye relief for me there is about 1/2 between hammer and scope bell.
