for rugged dependability at a reasonable cost you can't beat the classic 870

No doubt. I actually prefer the 870 over ANY pump in the world because of the dependability factor, you are right, you just can't beat em.

My model 7600 in .280 Remington. I'm also on the lookout for a .35 Whelen so I can add that to my favorites like Dave!

My favorite Rem is the 870 Wingmaster and I presently own a 12ga and a 20ga both with Skeet barrels.  I am also quite fond of the 788s owning a 6mm and a 22-250 in them.  I would have to say though that I probably shoot my Rem 581 which I had a custom walnut stock made for more than any other gun I own.  I also have another 581 that I shoot on occasion that is original.
Good Shooting,
George

My favorite Remington is my 870. It's killed numerous squirrel and has aimed to kill a few turkeys   But then again, my Remington 700 ADL Synthetic in .243 killed my first buck (and first deer :P )

My favorite Remington is a model 1100 12 gauge with a 28" vent rib barrel. I took my very fist deer with it (I'll never forget that one), My first squirrel and first rabbit. My dad gave it to me when I was to small to hold it. It has a lot of sentimental value and countless memories. I still take it out after squirrels on special occasions when my son goes hunting with me, one day soon it will be his and he needs to know how much it means to me before he gets it.

My favorite "modern" Remington is my 788 .308 carbine, purchased new quite a few years ago.  She is my favorite deer rifle: short , handy and quick in the brush and small fields.

My favorite "old" Remington is my 1918-dated M1891 Mosin Nagant rifle, which has been worked on by the Finns.  It has the crest intact and is a fairly scarce contract year (most are 1917-dated); the bore is also very nice and the bluing very good.  Overall, she is one good-looking "Russian" rifle.

I have a Model 700 BDL made in 1979. It is marked 7mm Express Remington, which is, of course, the 280 Remington cartridge by another name. It is a good rifle in a great caliber for hunting whitetail deer. Among my Remington rifles, this one would be the last to go. As for shotguns, an old 870 Wingmaster 12 gage that I bought used in 1980. and then, .22 rimfire rifles; a Model 513 bolt action is still a wonderful squirrel gun I would not want to be without. These three are "keepers."

fishman029:

I haven't had any success since 1991.  I started hunting them in 19 "aught" 62, and managed to put 10 of them in the freezer between '65 and '91.  None with that Whelen yet, but 8 of them were with my 742 in 30-06.

Tags have been awfully hard to get up here in recent years - there's a strong suspicion that they're going to outfitters in order to replace part of the income they lost with the cancellation of the spring bear hunt - so I've switched my focus to archery hunting rather than the gun hunt.

I may have to go outside the province if I ever want to hunt an adult animal again.

Mr Teal that's a really sad story    I'm hearing more of that more often. I believe Field and Stream posted an article with the issue of the tags going to the outfitters a while ago. Well, even though it's been more than a decade since you have drawn a tag, I hope this year and the years after are in your favor

I got my 870 Wingmaster in 1974, and still hunt with it and have never had a problem. Also have an 11/87, and just bought my daughter a 20 gauge 870 Express Youth.

My current favorite is my Remington 541-T heavy barreled .22 bolt gun.
It's incredibly accurate with CCI Green Tag ammo.

Hello

My new stainless/laminate Mountain Rifle in 30/06.  I have been wanting this rifle for a while now and well I was able to buy a new one and I have not been disappointed!  Up until it arrived it was my model 700 classic in 7mm-08 but that is now my wife's favorite rifle!

Mine would be the 700 bolt actions with the heavy barrel. Owned a .308 VS , sold it , regretted doing so!

Had .223 in a 700VLS and traded it for a 700P in .308. This one I am not going to sell or trade!

I have a few:

870 Express 20 gauge

511 Scoremaster .22 that can shoot groups at 25 yards I literally covered with a penny- not bad for 60 years old!

1100 in 20 gauge with the gold inlay
I have it on good authority that the telepromter is writing a stern letter.

541-T sporter wt. barrel. It shoots under 1/2" @ 50 yds. with CCI Green Tag and a few others and almost as well with any other good ammo.

Thanks Fishman, It will have to be a little story cause there is not much to it. I wish I could say that I scouted out the back country found his scrapes and then just plain outsmarted him. The real story is that I shot him on Nov. 19, 1999 in the pasture on the south side of my house. I had been watching several does and small bucks for the whole season and had passed on four different spikes, two 4 points, one 5 point and a basket racked 7 point in the month that the season had been open. I had seen one good buck, maybe this one I'm not sure, a week earlier all out chasing a doe. That's why I'm not sure if it was the same one or not. On the afternoon of the 19th I went out to hunt a little before I had to go to work. I watched five does come into the field then a spike and the 5 point came in about the same time. A little later the basket racked 7 point came in. It was the second time I had seen that 5 point and the fifth time I had seen the 7 point in just a month. Those two were harassing some of the does and just when I was about to give up and go get ready for work across the field I see this 8 point coming. Funny thing is that even though the rut was getting started good he was just passing through and ignored all the other deer. When he got to about 125 yards I shot him just in front of the near shoulder with my .270 Win. as he quartered toward me. He dropped in his tracks and all I had to do was walk back get the truck drive around to the gate and drive right up to him.
That was the best season I have had around here for the number of bucks seen. Even the doe sightings have dropped off in the past few years.
