the hammer of thor is a fine shootin rifle,a group like that at 500 yards is excellent to say the least.
so its just one rifle we have to pick.that chupas..i have to do that every time I look into the vault.I guess the ole 06 made by evelution with the 26" barrel would be me choice.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

1975 700 bdl 270. I've had more dead in the tracks kills with this rifle than  any other I own.

Model 141 in 35 Remington.

Nothing like it.  It points like a shotgun, carries like a feather.  Action is smooth as silk.  And it's just neat looking, with it's spiral magazine tube.

Oh yeah, it works, too.

It's a toss up between my Model 7 and 700 Mtn Rifle
« Reply #35 on: May 08, 2006, 04:36:05 PM »
I love to carry my 308 in a model 7 SS, it's accurate as all heck but I really hate that factory stock (hollow and cheap). I also love my 280 rem in the 700 mtn rifle. It's almost as light as my model 7 , it's blued and has a beatiful walnut stock with a detachable magazine.  I taken taken several deer with both. I guess I'll flip a coin.  The 700 Mtn rifle won. You can't go wrong with either model or just about any remington rifle for all that matters.

A 34 year old model 700 in 270 with a glass/kevlar aftermarket stock & a Kwik Klip conversion.  Now I can buy one from Remington with these features, had to do it yourself way back then.  This rifle has a few thousand rounds through it, and still is capable of throwing a better group than I can shoot.  Has the original Redfields 3x9 widefield on it as well.  Got some real fine experiences & memories with this one.  Tho' I screw around with other rifles, this is the one I most often take hunting.

# 1, Mountain Rifle with 1x4 leop. on in in .280, can't beat it with 2 sticks.

#2 , old 760 in .308 with barrel cut to 17.5", balance is butt heavy, but in a tree it is great, shoots 1 inches all day wit 150 rem. actoory ammo.

Beautiful rifle, mine's a .32 and is retired, no scope, no ammo, no ambition to make any.

My current goto deer rifle is my Remington 700 Classic in .257 Roberts with a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-!0.  I haven't found any load so far that it throws larger than 1-1/2" at 100 yards.  Shooting 100 gr. Nosler Partitions over 760 ball powder currently.  Groups average about 3/4" with that load.

Unfortunately I no longer have it....

Remington 788 circa early 1970's, in .308.

1/2" group at 100, using factory Remington Corelokt 150's. = dead deer out to 350 yards.

The one on the left is my go-to for anything that needs killin, mdl 700 bdl ss dm 7mm Rem Mag from the Rem custom shop with a harris bipod and a 3-10x Simmons scope and a limb saver recoil pad,i have killed many elk, deer, bear, yote, badger, skunk, rabbit, prarie dog, fox, ect ect with it and have never had a problem with the rifle,i had the stock and scope match painted after the stock was duracoated and glass bedded. The one on the right is a mdl 700 adl in 30-06 that my Dad bought the first year they hit the shelves back in the 60s,took my first elk and many other critters with this rifle that my Dad hunted with for 20+ years before he gave it to me,yet another 40 year old Rem that works as well as the day it was purchased,i did remove the old steel butplate and replace it with a pchymeyer recoil pad.I dont know how many critters have been shot with this rifle between me and my Father but Ill bet it would shock some.
If it aint fair chase its FOUL,and illegal in my state!

Jim17, you oughta send that P-17 in to E.R. Shaw and have them put a 24" 35 Whelen Ackley Improved on that action of yours.  Mine was a 30-06 original left-hand twist...and it was every bit as accurate as you claim.....It took me two years to make a decision to take that nice barrel off.....but it is even better with the 35 Whelen.....a 200 gr bullet gets nearly the same balistics and trajectory as 30-06.....but the bullet arrives with a lot more authority, and less bloodshot.   Better yet....Do like I did, Buy TWO of them and turn one into a Whelen, and you will have a match made in heaven.  I still have not figured out why other folks prefer ultra-fast and small bore for deer.  I guess they just have not tried medium-bores for hunting.  Myself....I prefer to have more meat in the freezer and less bloodshot and gelatinous goo to clean off everything.
....make it count

Good for you, Double 30, I love my 141.  Always on the lookout for a 14.

Would love a 25 Rem to play with.  I always thought that would be a neat cartridge.

My favorite deer rifle is a 740 semiauto in 30-06. Bought it real cheap to take on an out of state hunt. It will shoot Remington factory 165 or 180 grain CL into an inch at 100 yards. Removed the sights, customized the stock, had trigger adjusted, and an oversize safety put on and a Burris 2x7 BP  scope. My ideal deer rifle. My other favorite is a 700 classic in 7mm Weatherby Mag. Will shoot under one inch with handloads using the 160 grain accubond. I believe I will shoot a deer with it this next season.
