I have some 140 grain pistol bullets for a 357 mag. The problem is I can't find any load data for a pistol in the books that I have. I did find a reference for a load for a .357 mag rifle. Will this load be safe in a S&W revolver? I was planning on using the "starting load" only and using them for practice.

I have used the 140gr. bullet in every 357 i have owned. I use CCI 550 primers and 18 grains of 296. This has worked great in all my 357 pistols. Three of my friends are using this load and say it works great also. bobg :-)

My Speer #11 manual has handgun loads for their 140gr bullet. If you let me know what powders you are thinking about using I can give you the starting and max. loads and you can compare them to the rifle loads you have.

You can use the data for the next heaviest grain weight and be safe. That would be the 148 gr. The only problem is that that weight tends to be lite due to the fact its usually a wadcutter. But it would give you a starting point.

I'll list the loads out of my Lyman's 46th edition manual. The loads are listed start and max. All loads tested with a vented 4" barrel.

IMR 4227 [15.0 - 17.8] (1372 fps)

Unique [7.0 - 8.9] (1233 fps)

Blue Dot [9.2 - 11.9] (1272 fps)

2400 [12.5 - 16.5] (1343 fps)

296 [19.2] (Do not increase or decrease this load.) (1469 fps)

H110 [15.2 - 19.5] (1427 fps)

Many thanks. I plan on using H110 and the rifle loads are very similar the the loads you listed. I'm pretty new to reloading and seem to be "gun shy" whenever loading a new caliber. Thanks for the help.

a word about h110- it is a great powder for full house loads, do NOT try to use it for plinker loads. h110 requires near full case capacity or you will get inconsistant ignition. it might pay to look into a different powder if you intend to run them at moderate velocities.

All this talk about not using W-296 and H-110 loads...

Here is the useful range I found with these two powders and 140 grain bullets...

H-110 From 15.2 grains to 19.6 grains
CCI-550 Primer

W-296 From 15.8 grains to 20.0 grains
CCI-550 Primer

So much for "use this load only, do not increase or decrease"...

never said that you couldnt reduce the charge a little or add a little. just that when reducing loads past a point, h110 can cause problems. my point is that it is not one of the more flexible powders availibe for the purpose. fact is that h110 is one of my favorite powders, but i use other stuff for reduced plinkers.
