G2, more BS
« on: January 17, 2003, 03:36:12 AM »
Went to the TC company site  this morning.  This was  on page one.  I know it is getting boring hearing about the G2.  But I was lonely and needed to talk to someone.

Welcome to the new Thompson/Center Arms website. We've redesigned the look and updated it to match our new 2002 catalog.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new G2 Contender is currently in the pre-production mode. The design has been finalized, and hand-built working models have been tested extensively, even to the point of being used by several writers on hunts - successfully. The enthusiasm expressed by these writers has been overwhelming to say the least. Molds are currently being made for the required investment castings, and progress at this time is right on schedule to meet fall delivery schedules. Thank you for your patience, and your support of the Contender. As previously announced, all old Contender barrels will fit the new G2 Contender frame without alteration.

That BS has been their story for well over 2 years I think... and the writers shot the "2" prototypes something like 2 years ago too.  I've shot Contender's since the start of the 70's, Encore's from almost day one they became available.   But T/C went to hell after the fire, and soon fell well down my list of companies to do business with - I bought only custom barrels from then on.  Then at the 2000 SHOT Show, after a couple of long chats with Tim Pancurak (T/C's top liar) and Ken French about their "new" direction and all the internal problems at T/C, they made it all the way to the bottom of my list and I all but sold off the 30 years of accummulated T/C products I had over the next few months (it was A LOT!).   Only kept 2 "C" frames for all my custom barrels - dumped everything else with their name on it.    Have said for about 2 1/2 years the G2 will never get retailed - wouldn't buy one even if it did.   You'd be better off, have a better product by buying more pre-fire Contender frames like I still want to do.   Yep, IMO and YMMV.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

They had a big fire a years back and lost their wood shop.  They were down for quit a spell. I went through their factory a few years ago and all seemed well. They were real nice and gave out some T/C patches. They do a lot of other castings for other folks along with their own and maybe it is getting to be to much. They aren't a hugh factory but seemed to have thing will organized. I saw the G2 at the last shot show in vegas and was told it was ready to go. I don't know where yet but time will tell. I buy only stainsteel any more and don't plan on seeing one of those at all. I picked up a second Contender frame while they were still available from Virgin Valley and figure that is where it will end.

Geronimo -
The blue "pre-fire" easy open frames started around serial number 95,000 - I have the numbers what they ran to when the fire hit, but don't know where my records are now after a move.   Easiest "approximate" guide between pre and post would be to look at the frame side plates.   Pre-fire had the deep relief full body cougar - post-fire the hen scratched engraving.   Not exact, but close enough to go by.   All but the earliest post-fire also have a change in the breech face that was a good idea in therory, but with T/C's poor QC was a nightmare on the only post-fire frame I ever bought.

They lost a lot more than just the wood shop, also lots of tooling which they never replaced (the products they were for dropped when old inventory spared by the fire ran out).   I also again saw the G2 proto's they had at the last LV show, but that was nearly a year ago and they were singing this same tune then - bet it won't be any differnt at this years show in Orlando (2 weeks away).   But more importantly, that new frame you just got... if they did a trigger job on it, please PM me and I'll fill you in on something you should be made aware of.

I ordered an unfinished forend from them in December, they said it should take 6 weeks. I asked how it was going last week and they said they had dropped all work to prepare for a show (don't remember where), and their #1 item at the show will be the Omega, so they put all Contender/G2/Encore work on the back burner...gee thanks.

Ladobe,
Thanks for the info, as Johnny would say, "I did not know that." I'll look closer at the frames now. If you come across the serial numbers I'd be interested to know.

I know the big claim to fame with the G2 is the trigger assembly . They spout that you don't have to open the action if you decide not to shoot and let the hammer down. Well...... if you use the triger guard instead of the trigger to release the hammer ( pull on guard just hard enough to release trigger ) you DO NOT need to open the action to reset firing pin.

Then again everone already knew this right.
