Ruger Trigger

I have a Ruger 77 centerfire with a crappy trigger. What is the best fix? Have a gun smith do a trigger job? Have a new adjustable trigger installed? Can that be done by me or do I have to have a smith install it?

Thanks

Please be very cautious when altering the trigger of any firearm..  There can be cerious consequences..  The last M77 MkII I worked on was a stainless and the triggers are atrocious..  Carefully following the directions will USUALLY give a safe trigger, if it fails one can always put an adjustable model in.  They too are a bit interesting to set up but easier than adjusting the original..  Be certain to check the safety mechanism while in there, the last several I looked at needed work to make the safeties work..  of course that may be the reason I had them in the first place!!

Sold the Ruger and bought a Savage with the accutrigger. No more factory guns with crappy triggers for me.

The old Rugers with the tang safety had excellant adjustable triggers and Remington has an adjustable trigger.  The savage Accutrigger is a wonder..  and on a fairly reasonably priced rifle that has a reputation as being great shooters..  The Ruger MKII is a real step back.  A look at the castings used to produce the trigger mechanism and the receiver look to have been designed to provide adjustment, it just wasn't completed.  I believe this may be a sign of the loss of the leadership of Bill Ruger..  I certainly hope the legal eagles don't ruin another fine arms maker..

Just installed a Timney trigger on my Ruger Mark II 308 compact. Trigger breaks at 2lbs 3oz. No creep. Very aggressive bolt slams several times and the sear holds. A little fitting was necessary to get the safety to work, but the Timney instructions are quite clear.

Ruger 77 triggers from the past were adjustable and pretty decent.  The newer MKII triggers were "improved" and made non adjustable. I won't go into a rant about that.
The answer is a Timney tirgger and sear. They come together as a set. They are adjustable for engagement, overtravel, and weight and are the equal of any really, really good trigger. Any Ruger I intend to keep has a Timney installed. If you look at it from a financial pont of view, the Ruger costs at least $50 less than most bolt rifles, add a $60 Timney trigger and you've only got about the same money in it.
