Want New .22LR Need Opinions Please

I want to buy a bolt action 22 LR mainly for plinking and occasional hunting.  It must be accurate and I do not want to spend big bucks on it.  Price range of $225 or less.  I think I want a wood stock because many of the synthetic .22s look cheap.  My current choices are CZ 452 ~$220, Marlin 925 ~$155, and a savage (not sure of the model or price).  Any other suggestions are welcome.  Which of these would be the best fit for handling and accuracy?  Thanks for the input.      Andrew

Actually they can do better than that with ammo they like!! I second this choice! they are not as nicely finished as a more expensive sporter like a CZ but they have it where it counts in the bore! They have a bore that is as good as any target rifle. This coming from my gunsmith who put a borescope down my bore and inspected the rifleing. If you want a fancier looking rifle you cannot go wrong with a CZ!  Jim

:-D  I would get the CZ and work a little on the trigger. The one I have is  a shooter. It came with one magazine and I got a second 10 shot one. It shoots better with open sights than most. Have not scoped it yet..May never do so.. I like to shoot it at @ 60 yards offhand at a 1 1/4 piece of pipe hanging from a tripod. We can keep it dancing.. cbagman

I would recommend a CZ 452.  They are of good quality, and I have yet to see one that wasn't an excellent shooter.

cz 452 gets my vote for wood stock....marlin 880 sq with a $2.00 trigger trick gets my synthetic stock vote.

How about that new Kimber with the scope that ya can't buy yet that's in the latest Gun and ammo. The gun is about 1,000 and they didn't say what the calibrated scope would cost.

The scope is what got my interest it's calibrated for 22HV type ammo with graduations out to 200 yards. Now we are talking this type of shooting with a 22 is about like long range shooting (600+) with a .308 and they have a scope for that too.  company is rapidrecticle.com

Savage gets my vote as well. Savage Mark II is my rimfire rifle of choice. Dependable, rugged, and easy to maintain. Fairly cheap too. Got mine for >$175

I'd second a Romanian 22LR military trainer.  They are very accurate & reliable.  SOG has them for $69 (includes $10 handpick fee).  Request an 80s production rifle because the ones I have were like new.  Excellent bores.  Metal & wood were 90%-95%.  The rifles shoot like a BB gun.  Very little recoil or noise.  With extra mag, transfer fees & shipping the total per rifle was about $100.  I got one for my son, daughter & myself.  Trying to talk mamma into one too.  You can't go wrong on these puppies.

My vote is for the CZ 452.  A good looking rifle, and very accurate.  A lot of people here like the Romanian, but I like a rifle to look nice too.  If you have a Gander Mountain near you they have a CZ .22 rifle for $179 (not sure which model).  Or, if you can find one, Norinco made a copy of the Brno (CZ) that you can sometimes find for around $100.  These are also well made and good shooters, although the wood wasn't great on them.

If you want something unique--a while back SOG had a straight-pull .22 bolt action made by CZ for under $200.

Also consider a good quality used bolt gun.  For prices of rifles suggested, may be able to get Remington 521T, a Mossberg 44US, some older Savage models, Remington "teen" rifles (511, 512, etc.)
Triggers not target quality but as good or better than comparably priced new rifles, stocks good quality wood (e.g., all Remmys walnut), no plastic and no alloy.
After giving my expensive bolts to my sons, got used Rem 511 w. grooved receiver, Acraglas bedded it and installed modest priced scope.  Now, at 50 ft offhand, of 40 shots average deviation from point of aim is little more than 1/4".  Rifle cost $125.

camsdaddy; take your gun apart and take out the screw on your trigger and the spring should fall out. set the spring aside and get a ink pen spring and cut it with wire cutters the same size as the original spring and put back in and put back together. should lighten pull at least in half. let me know how u like it :wink:

Another trick is to "Marry the trigger."  Take the rifle, unloaded, cock it and press hard on the striker (or hammer if you have a hammer style) and pull the trigger.  A few repetitions of this will often produce a really noticeable result.

You can also buy trigger lube from Brownells -- a bit on the sear and bent will improve things, as well.

Backlash (movement of the  trigger after the sear releases) can be cured by drilling a hole in the trigger blade and tapping it for an allen screw.  With the screw installed, try the trigger, adjusting the screw until it the sear breaks and the trigger blade stops with minimal movement.  Mark and  remove the screw, file it flush with the trigger, coat it with a dab of nail polish and re-install.

i own both the cz 452 and the savage. i put an aftermarket trigger on the savage, and its great but cost $80. the rifle is very accurate!!!!1/4 inch groups at 50yds. from machine rest. then i bought the cz. it has an adjustable trigger right from the box, and is truely a fine piece of workmanship, the iron sites are some of the best ive seen. it,s almost as accurate as the savage, but is much better looking!! and has a better trigger.
  look at other rifles that look as good as the cz,s and then look at the price tag. you will find that they compair with guns costing twice as much!
 then post a question to cz owners and ask if they shoot well? in the few years i,ve been a cz fan i havnt heard of any that thought the cz was a dog!
 i have owned guns from high end to junk, and in my opinion, the cz is the best brand for the money!
 i own three coopers, a few semi custom guns and a few benchrest guns. i really like the cooper .22 rifle, it,s more pretty than my cz but it costs five times more!!!  will it shoot better? is the trigger better?
  i hope they stay with there current quality!

A European style stock may not be your kind of thing, but they look a ton better than a Romanian, with mill marks still on the barrel and a stock that looks like it was made from a twisted 2x4.
