SavageT,
the recommended case lubes have always been the special preparations marketed by the reloading die manufacturers, and similar products such as Imperial Sizing Wax, STP, anhydrous lanolin, etc.
The reason they work well is that a high film strength lubricant is needed to cold-form the cartridge case and protect the sizing dies.
Years ago I worked in an industrial metal tube manufacturing plant, and the sizing lubricants were purchased in 55 gallon barrels. That stuff varied in viscosity from light syrup to slow-and-heavy semi-solid and was poured out of spigots into buckets for use at the sizing stations. The grade of lubricant depended on material, size of die, pulling speed, and a whole bunch of other variables. All the sizing dies were tungstun carbide.
For the usual case sizing on steel 7/8"x14 reloading dies, I've tried spray-on waxes and the usual result were stuck cases, pulled-off rims, and frustrating cleaning sessions.
