Recoil of the 835 Ulti-Mag
« on: August 17, 2004, 04:00:41 PM »
I recently did the math on the amount of recoil on my shoulder of the 835..Could someone see if I'm right..I converted 2 ounces to 875 grains for the shot..36.5 grains powder..1250 fps. and a gun weight of 8 pounds..It came to 63ft. lbs rcoil..Does this sound right?

I make it 67.6 Ft Lb. That's figuring 33 grains for the wad. Without that 33 grains, your figure is about right.

That's compared to the average trap load of around 21 Ft Lb. I wouldn't want to shoot too many of them.

I'm only 130 lbs and 5'11"..Sitting on the ground when I pull the trigger it lays me flat on my back..Standing I can cycle 3 rounds as fast as I can chamber the next rounds...Best was ten consecutive shots before I decided to let my shoulder heal for a while..This is strictly my turkey gun and I get nearly all pellets in a 20 inch circle at 30yds..I LOVE THIS GUN

Thats why we Turkey hunters like to think of ourselves as "one shot, one kill" shotgun snipers.  Its because we cant shoot more than 2 rounds without crying like the little kids we are  :-D .

I have very litle trouble shooting my 835 with full 3 1/2 loads. the great thing about shotshells is you can always shoot the shorter shells to help reduce recoil

I don't know what the numbers are, but I can say that I'd much rather shoot my 338Wm than to shoot my 835 with 3-1/2" buckshot loads. I almost feel sorry for the turkeys, but then I think about how hard it's hitting me and I guess it's actually about even :-)

the last time I shot a turkey with 3- 1/2  full power turkey I did not even feel the recoil. same when I used the same shotgun to take a very nice buck with 3" winchester sabots.

I have found when I an concentrating on the other things ( animal, background, sight picture, my stability, and -----) that I do not feel the recoil at all.
