Old Model .41 Mag Blackhawk
« on: August 17, 2004, 04:55:49 PM »
Shop has a real nice .41 mag Old Model Blackhawk for sale.  I think it is a 6" barrel.  For some reason I keep wanting to go down and get it.  I don't know why, 'nuther caliber and all.

Does anyone have one like this and does it shoot well?  Just let me know how much you like it if you don't mind.  Thanks.

Buster,
If the pistol you are looking at is one of the old flat tops its worth more than just your average gun. They were all good shooters as far as i'm concerned. The flat tops were manufactured from 1955 to 1963. If its one of the later models, The ones they call the pre.warning models they still bring a little more money. If its in good shape and you like it, I would buy it. 41 cal. is a great gun for all around shooting. Good luck.

Buster, if the gun is tight and isn't missing alot of bluing, by all means get it if the price is good. Just for safety's sake remember there is no transfer bar under the hammer. Load 5 in the cylinder and carry with the hammer down over an empty chamber. I really like mine. I've carried and used a 4&5/8ths with a three digit serial number since the early sixties. My other is a four digit with a 6&1/2 inch barrel. There were no flat-top .41Magnums ever made by Ruger as far as my information goes. My computer wallpaper is of a NM that D. Clements made into a flat-top. It's my understanding that he doesn't do the conversion anymore, however. If you decide to buy the OM .41Magnum Blackhawk I'll have to welcome you to the small but dedicated ranks of .41Magnum shooters. :-D

It seems to be in great shape just going by the blue and drag mark.  It has the original box.  Only problem is it is priced as high as a new one.
I'll see if I can't work on 'em some about the price.  Doesn't have a warning stamp.  Well, I've decided to go on down there and check it out real well.  If it holds up in the light of day I'll put it on lay-a-way.  They let me pay forever if need be! LOL!

Thanks for the info on carrying it hammer down on and empty chamber.  My first handgun was an old model Super Single Six, so I'm used to all that.  I guess old model Ruger's are in my blood now.

Checked the Blackhawk out real well.  It is a 5 digit model that has been factory converted to New model configuration.  The old parts are in a bag in the box.

There are two hairline scratches about 1/4" long on the right side of the frame.  That and the cylinder drag mark are the only marks.  No scratches on grip frame or grips.

I like the gun but I didn't put any money on it.  Just got to think about it some more.  I have a very accurate stainless Redhawk and another hunting gun isn't really necessary.  Of course that never stopped me before :).

Buster,

If the BH is in that good a shape with the original box and you can get it for less than say, $400, I'd take it. I've seen people wanting > $500 for some pretty ratty specimens. The original box and parts only sweeten the deal. I'd get it, put the old parts back in it, and shoot it with  a medium load and a 210-220gr. hard cast lead Keith-type bullet. It will last the rest of your lifetime as well as your kids if you've got'em.  8)

Still thinkin' about it!  I'm gonna wait and get my money right, and if it is still there make an offer and stick to it.  I can't bring myself to trade my Redhawk for it.  It is a very nice handgun for certain.
