It's been burning all around Bettles. I'm also concerned, I'm due to go to Bettles on the 5th of Sept myself.
Went to the Taylor highway last Thursday. Watched lighting strike on the mountain slope just around from us at our camp, just after sundown. Saw a small glow over there, then a spruce tree erupted, in just a few minutes several more started. Since this was on the same mountain we were on, (we were out on one point and the fire was on the next) we were a bit concerned. We stayed up and watched it for several hours. Luckily the wind was blowing across not toward us. We were also above tree line, and near a large rockey area with no vegitation. A lot of area has burned, and is still burning, along the Taylor.
On Friday evening the wind changed and started blowing the fire up a valley we had seen Caribou migrating to Thursday night and earlier friday. Caribou came out of that valley by the hundreds. We could see them in the glow of the fire, but not well enough to do any shooting.
Saturday morning I came out of the tent and saw Caribou just 200 yards from camp. They were followed by a large bull. One shot, One bull. Shot him with a 30-06 Handi rifle, with 180 grain Noslers. Hit him a little high, took out both lungs, exited the far side. He ran about 75 yards.
