Too Much Smoke
« on: August 17, 2004, 07:41:27 PM »
Just got back from the Alaska Range to look for sheep.  visibility is too low for glassing the hills.  Can't see more than 300 to 500 yards in most areas.  Gave up on looking for sheep.  Met some folks that were waiting for their pilot to come back and get them, but the pilot can't see to land.  They did not want to pack the sheep and Caribou they had outside the restricted area to my vehicle.  Drove my Dune Buggy all the way to the Wood River.  Trail is full of dust.  Very little water in the clear water rivers.  The Wood is flowing well being Glacial.  Saw few animals.  Did see two new fires in the flats, still small.  If the weather stays hot and dry they will probably grow fast.  Don't think I'm going to bother going to the Taylor due to the smoke.  If the wind comes up we'll go, otherwise we'll pass.  Hope the smoke clears before September.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Yea it is even in Valdez down here.

I was up on the other side of the Wrangles and same thing.  Sheep hunters could not see much at all.  Had a nice trip though.

Waiting very impatiently for my moose hunt now.

Even here on Kodiak the past few days our visibility has been reduced by a bunch of smokey-haze.  Come on guys, get your fires under control! :)

I am going on a Caribou hunt on the 27th of August. I am going to the brooks range out of Bettles. How are the fires there? I tried to look up the fires, but could not find them on the internet.

Checkout the smoke.

Sure looks like you folks have a lot of smoke.  Try this link

Go to >New Imagery.  Take a look at the two Aug. 17th Ak images.

Also check out the Alaskan Fire Service page.

Siskiyou, looks like a lot of smoke.    I hope the fires get under control. I guess they could use some much needed rain.

I think Alaska is setting a fire record.  I guess the fire season is normally over with by this time of year?

Try finding GEOMAC on the web.  I'll try the link  http://geomac2.cr.usgs.gov/#

We're smelling smoke in Bristol Bay too

Wed and Thursday we could smell smoke here in Dillingham too.  The sky was fairly hazy Wed too.  We're so dry out here that I'm  a little concerned we could have our own fires here too- 'specially now that the registration moose hunt opened today. Lets hope for smoe August rain.

Delta has been socked-in for two months.....very warm and dry....Taylor Highway area is black....Brooks should be a better bet for this fall.

A really lousy summer!

I am going to Fairbanks on Friday the 27th and then to Bettles on the 28th.  Then out to the brooks range. Hope there won't be any problems.

It's been burning all around Bettles.  I'm also concerned, I'm due to go to Bettles on the 5th of Sept myself.

Went to the Taylor highway last Thursday.  Watched lighting strike on the mountain slope just around from us at our camp, just after sundown.  Saw a small glow over there, then a spruce tree erupted, in just a few minutes several more started.  Since this was on the same mountain we were on, (we were out on one point and the fire was on the next) we were a bit concerned.  We stayed up and watched it for several hours.  Luckily the wind was blowing across not toward us.  We were also above tree line, and near a large rockey area with no vegitation.   A lot of area has burned, and is still burning, along the Taylor.

On Friday evening the wind changed and started blowing the fire up a valley we had seen Caribou migrating to Thursday night and earlier friday.  Caribou came out of that valley by the hundreds.  We could see them in the glow of the fire, but not well enough to do any shooting.

Saturday morning I came out of the tent and saw Caribou just 200 yards from camp.  They were followed by a large bull.  One shot, One bull.  Shot him with a 30-06 Handi rifle, with 180 grain Noslers.  Hit him a little high, took out both lungs, exited the far side.  He ran about 75 yards.
