Single shot or revolver?
« on: August 18, 2004, 11:10:43 AM »
I have never had use of more than one shot when hunting before - but on my last day in Africa this year - I wounded a warthog.  After one hour -suching for the hog - I could hear something which took off in the bushes.
It was the warthog.  I was lucky and hit it high in his back when he was running away from me.  If I had missed - I would have problems to reload fast enough to shoot at him again.  But with a revolver - I could shoot at least one more shot.  What do you prefer?  Single-shot pistol or revolver?

well....i just love em both. i can see your idea here though. the single shot does lag behind with a follow up shot, as compared to the speed of the revolver. you can greatly cut down the reload time with a single shot by using a wrist ammo holder. i carry 3-5 rounds of ammo right on my left wrist. then......you can break down, while holding the forearm with your left hand, and reload with your right hand. this will speed up the second shot by a great deal.

Most hunting situations, I would go with a single shot.  :D

If that's a typical hunting scenario for you, get the revolver. I use both, and consider my Contender to be my primary hunting handgun, but my applications are typical American stuff like shooting from a tree stand, long distance shots, or shots where a follow up shot is unlikely to be necessary.  I got a revolver just for hog hunting because they're dangerous, are engaged at close range, and may need a follow-up shot.

With the single-shot, I find that I can reload in about the same time I can chamber a second round in a bolt action rifle, it just takes some practice and an ammo holder that fastens to your wrist for convenience.

sounds like you want us to talk you into another gun. :-D
i like them both, but hunt more with a revolver.   and as far as they go,  my favorite out of all of them is a ruger superblackhawk 4 5/8" barrel.  it packs light and isnt any bit of hinderance.   so long as it is legal where you are, you could carry the revolver to where your going and use it in when following wounded game.  once you get to your hunt area, pull out the single shot.

well i prefer the single shot.  it just works for me.  now that i've said that i'll be honest and say that i also carry a revolver, anytime i'm in the woods doing anything and its usually my GP100.  (heck there is a revolver on my hip everyday of the week, wether i'm in the woods or in the city but its my S&W 642 .38spl).  when tracking wounded game, the revolver becomes my primary.  when stand hunting, or long range shots, its the single shot.  from the truck to the stand, the revolver is primary.

I know what you mean Chris. I am the same way.  :D

check your stat , county and town laws before you decide.

In my county I can only deer hunt with a muzzle loading handgun that holds at least 40 grs of powder and have a barrel at least 6 inches long.

so that lets most all muzzle loading revolvers so I had to g way of a custom 209x50 contender barrel. I did try the ruger old army but it was lacking in power for anything but the closest shots.

now for rabbit and squirrel i can use anything
My handgun of choice for them is a 5.5 inch Ruger mark II that I customized. during late season and during early season I use my 10 inch 45/410.

now if i go in other counties in my state I can use a center fire handgun for deer but it must  have a barrel of 6 inches or longer and develop a muzzle energy of 700 foot pounds or more. this requirement will let out MOST revolver calibers.

I also use both. When setting a stand I use an Encore with a 15 in. barrel, a scope and a by-pod. When walking around or driveing deer I carry a revolver. If I could only have 1 it would be a revolver with iron sights, but since I can have more than 1 I use different gun for different situation.

Most of my deer hunting is done from a treestand and a scoped  Contender works well in that situation.  I feel at a disadvantage when still hunting with this setup though.

:cb2: I think ya just need to get you a good .44 mag. and use it for a season or two and then decide.  :)

Any excuse to buy a new gun is a good one! Plus, there's nothing like strengthening the economy right before an election!  :D

I love my scoped single shots. Great for stands and such. If I am still hunting however its the revolver with open sights. I'll often run a 12-14" single shot in the stand and then put it away, climb down, and haul out the revolver as I move around. The brush is thick in my area - 50 yards is generally tops in most places (even my single shots tend to be larger bore because for me 100-150 yards is about tops and at that range I like a 2x scoped 357Max, 35 rem etc. better than the 30cals and on down).

 Sometimes I carry a S&W .44 classic with a Millet red dot in  bandoleer rig and also a scoped carbine.. In fact I generally carry a long and short gun and if the shortie is a TC then both are scoped..   cbagman
