What peep sight do you like?
« on: August 18, 2004, 06:34:07 PM »
I am planning to put a rear peep sight on my newly purchased Model 94 in .356 Win.
I looked at the ghost XS and the "one ragged hole" web sites.

Anyone have a favorite that works well in low light and thick cover I'd sure like to hear about it. Thanks! :D

I've never put a peep on a Winchester, but the Williams receiver sight works for me on Marlins.  So far, I haven't even had to change a front sight.  In heavy kickers, I shy away from tang sights, due to the possibility of eye damage when shooting at odd angles (mostly steep up angles).

The aperatures that come with the Williams work fine for most situations, or you can just unscrew them in low light, which gives you huge, "ghost ring" style aperatures.  I use the cheap ones, under $35, and they've worked just fine.  Other screw in aperature sizes are available.

How do you like that .356 so far?  I've been looking for one in good condition.

For a number of years my M760 had a  Model 5D Williams peep sight on it.  I removed the apertures and never used it.  I also used a Williams peep sight on a slug gun.  Very dependable.

My Dad had a Model 94 Winchester with a Lyman Tang sight.  I was always afraid I was going to knock my eye out with it.

My vote goes for a tang sight for the longer sight radius.  Have used Lyman #2's and am now a Marble fan.  The Lyman had a wobble to it that I didn't care for and is not windage adjustable without tapping the front sight. The Marble is rock solid and you can adjust windage with a knob mounted on the sight.

I used to use a 94 Trapper in .44 Magnum. I had a William’s peep with the aperture removed. Worked well for me.

The two lever rifles in my possession what are not scoped are a marlin 336 30/30 w/24" barrel and a Marlin 62 converted from 256 to 357 Mag. Both have the Williams FP sights used without target appeture. POW

I Like the Williams, I have a 5D on my 1894SS right now, it's cheaper than the fancy one, and the only difference is the ease of adjustments.  With either one, once you set it, it stays put, unless you're in the habit of dropping your rifles out of treestands!

If you have the extra money, go for the Williams Foolproof or the Lyman 66 receiver sights.  If you need to spend less, go with the Williams 5D (which appellation came from the original price of 5 dollars).  I have used the Foolproof for 40 years now on various rifles and it has stood me well.  It is on my Winchester 88 right now.  My first 5D was bought a couple of months ago to go on a marlin 336 I picked up.  It is basically the same sight as the Foolproof except that you have to manually make the adjustments while the Foolproof has screw adjustments.  You can also get the later with target knobs so you don't need to use a screwdriver, except possibly to tighten down the locking screw.

As Leverfan says, you can remove the screw-in aperture and then you have the original ghost ring.  For sighting in and fine work you can get a small target aperture.  There is also the twilight aperture available which is supposed to help in low-light situations.

Hope this helps.  Let us know what you get and how you make out!

Using Williams 5D on Marlin 336 'Thudy Thudy' same round usually - so seldom using the adjustment feature. Economical peep sight; a good step up from the factory rear sight.
