Carrying moose milk?
« on: August 20, 2004, 05:21:07 AM »
Ok all you traditionalist, it seams moose milk is the preferred patch lube, so how do you carry it to a traditional match and stay in period? For fun shooting I can come up with something but suggestions are welcome. IÂ’m interested in the 1750Â’s French and Indian Wars period but IÂ’m sure others would like to hear about other periods as well.

I don't....I carry natural lube...in my mouth...pop in a patch, and swab the bore with that between shots...I carry extra patches in wooden pill boxes...found them years ago...about an inch in diameter...put my lubed patches in there, and fill the lid with my preferred lube Snow-Seal...flintlock

I take a clear plastic bag and put it in a leather pouch, put in a whole bunch of pre-cut patches, pour in moose milk and let it soak in, pour out the excess, and go shootin.

If you want to get real fussy water-proof your leather with what ever works, then make a pouch, then etc. etc.

Best of luck with your shootin

This whole moose milk thing (and muzzle loading in general) is new to me.  I thought I read someone say they let it dry before shooting???  Idf that is the case seems like it wouldn't matter how you carried it.

No one I know has ever done that, never heard of doing that until I read it here. It works great wet for trail walks where you load and shoot within a few minutes and are shooting lots without wiping. I wouldn't recommend the wet load for hunting.

Some do carry it dry, but the wet stuff seems to clean my barrel as it goes down.  I have never used it any other way.  I guess you could try both ways, I have never seen the need.

And every black powder shooter I know is still learnin stuff, no matter how long he or she has been shootin.  Just the way of things.  Your just learnin sumthin different.

Best of luck

Sorta depends on what you are using the moose milk for.  I use it for patch lube and as a solvent.  Mix it 1/5 to 1/7 for patch lube and 1/10 for solvent.

I presoak my shooting patches in strips and then hang them to dry.  Got a bunch hanging over the porch swing at this moment.  Makes for clean easy to use patches.  For big game hunting I carry a small strip in my bag but for the most part rely on speed loaders.  For small game or trail walks take a strip of dry lubed material and cut a buttonhole in it and hang it off a button on the front of my shirt.

For wiping, i wet a patch as used from a small squeeze type mustard bottle.  I wipe after every shot so don't care if my patch lube is dry or not.

For the actual carrying, I don't carry it myself any more but rather have my bearer do it for me as below.

Can't stand it.....

:?:  So if you are a true "traditionalist", do you carry your chew on one side and the Mooses Milk in your other cheek pouch?

:D Howdy, carry my patches in a patch box aka candy tin (altoids),it has a hinged lid and you can make it look primitive by burning the paint off and putting dents in the lid.I'd like to share my Moose Milk recipe,
13 oz water
3 oz of water soluble cutting oil
1 oz murphy soap
You can shoot till the cows come home, you can shoot forever you will never have a problem loading.Use it to clean the bore (short term)

Great idea.

Now, for your field trip, you can bring your students to my elk camp in mid sept where the above bullwinkle and a cow and a calf were regular visitors to the camp.  They could get some hands on experience :)

most traditionalist use bear oil.. that is fat rendered and set in sun to settle until clear..  it will be very accurate.. slightly differing amounts during hot/cold/ dry/ damp days and first and seccessive shots will give very good accuracy.. ive was told by walt foster from park city is  a good substitute to be neatsfoot oil.. pure.   i use old bottles with little corks to hold neatsfoot oil then  and 1/2 murpy soap oil 1/2 water. for wipe. in below frezzing weather i use 1/2 murphy soap oil and 1/2 alcohol.  this mix is for cleanup or wiping .. when wearther gets below freezing there is no/very little  humidity, and the fouling gets darn hard.. the pre made moose milk pathces will not have enough lube to work well. they also are of only one consistency .  so if you get the neatsfoot oil thick enough could it will keep it going. little less for first shot little more after that.. i use like 3 tippups of bottle on different areas of patch for first shot on average day and up to 5 tipups in dry weather on 16 gauge smoothbore longstock  flintlock. takes some experience but the best way ive found.. rifles can be tricky in cold weather, and may need wiping after one to three rounds depending on how much black your stuffing.. more powder / more fouling..  smooth bores will shoot continually in all kinds of weather, but your distance is limited of course..  i just cronographed it the other day, it shoots a 400 grain round ball at 1000 feet per second with 70 grains 2fg.. ..  it also works great on ducks with bismuth... good luck dave..

another tip, reload imidatly after you shoot, if the fouling has a chance to dry in the muzzel  before you load  a wet pathc and ball your accuracy will go to crap, and isnt easy to get out in the field.. and sorry, yes many may old timers and present use spit.. didnt mean to ddraw attention from that..its fine if you shoot right away, but if left after fireing it could  work on your chamber , i belive, and can cause chamber damage.. my opinion only...  the old guns  were freshened from time to time, becouse of the rigors of the field in the years past, kind of like boaring out the cylinders in the car..   .. dave.

"Period" containers are real easy to come buy..... just ask your family doctor for a couple of empty clear glass bottles that injectible medication comes in.  Remove the label and rubber stopper and replace with a suitable size cork..... will pass muster at most any event.

 I almost forgot about my rondezvous days.. We did not have to contend with a lot of freezing weather down here in South Carolina. For true primitive  meets I liked bees wax and beef fat cause I couldn't find a bear willing to give up any fat.. Mixed 50/50. Don't get it to hot, just enough to get it well mixed.  Keep it in a tin as well as some prelubed patches. Keep the moosemilk with the alcohol in a glass bottle and that tip about the bottles from the doc is right on. We would stitch a thin leather covering over the bottle up to the neck with a six inch tag off the top..You could hang it off yer sash or just be handier to get out the possible bags..Carried oil in a small plated oiler.. Not being authentic would cost you tokens.. If you are interested, I can try to post some pictures of possible bags I made.. They called me the carolinabagman at rondezvous.. I did at least 150 or more... from cbagman

:D      For what it is worth.  I have pretty much settled on the Neatsfoot Oil for my patch lube.  It is easy to find and easy to use, just make sure that it is Pure, not a compound.  I use it both for hunting and for target with no problems as of yet.............stay safe....King
