What difference is there in 22LR and 22 Match barrels?

Must be a simple explanation, but I haven't been able to find it. Is this an actual chamber dimension difference ?  If this is true, then that explains the high price 22 Match ammo on the dealers shelves. thanks  Geno

.22 LR Match ammunition is premium priced because of the quality control and manufacturing required to establishand maintain a match ammunition brand's reputation.  It's performance has to be as close to identical from one batch to another as modern manufacturing can make it.

a .22 LR Match chamber certainly DOES have different dimensions from the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturer's Institute (SAAMI) Standard .22 LR chamber.  It is cut to minimum dimensions and the throat dimensions are tighter.

The match chamber in my Bullery was cut so that the bullet just barely jams into the start of the lands/grooves when the action is closed.   It will shoot cheapie ammo just as well as the expensive "match" ammo.

I have bought a used Contender with new .22LR Match Barrel.  I expect to take delivery next week when my pistol permit paperwork comes in.  

What is the proper way to break it in, if a break in is necessary, and what do you all recommend to clean it?  I have heard some mention of "Flitz" being used to remove milling marks.  Is this recommended and if so how much?

In the past I have just used Hoppes and a brass brush, followed by an oiled patch.

Since getting the Encore in .260 Rem. I have used Sweets 7.62 and cloth patches, No Brush, followed by an oily patch exclusively, and it seems to do a super job.

Any thoughts on the break in and care of the new .22LR are most appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I remember reading somewhere not to shoot high velocity ammo in a match barrel because of the extended case length(too long for match barrel dimensions)? Any truth to that?

I recently picked up a Super 14 Match Grade .22 LR Contender Barrel. This is a factory barrel, to say I am pleased with it's accuracy would be an understatement.

Yes the chambers in Match Barrels are cut to tighter specs than are standard sporting chambers. In my barrel the bullets engage the rifling.

This barrel also seems to shoot a lot of different types of ammo good, but shoots certain brands and types great.

As to the shooting of High Velocity .22 LR Ammo in a Match Chamber, the reference should be for Hyper Velocity Ammo in a Match Chamber. Certain brands and types of HYPER VELOCITY .22 LR Ammo do indeed use a cartridge case that is longer than standard, and could damage a Match Chamber. Cartridges that come to mind are the CCI Stingers, Quick Shok, and maybe a few others I can not think of right now.

I can not say for sure if the Match Chamber is worth the extra $$$, I have never owned a standard .22 LR Contender Barrel. However as with centerfire guns and chambers, the chamber can and does make a difference in accuracy.
