Author Topic: New Winnie 94AE (safety) and peep tang sights? (Read 1258 times)

I have this New Winchester 94AE Trapper in .357M (and boy do I enjoy shooting it), but I'd like to replace the buckhorn sight for something more precise.

Although these guns have got a tang mounted safety, Marble was working on a tang sight for 'em.

Does anybody know whether or not Brownells is already selling those?

Or does anybody just took off the safety, drilled the tang and mounted the tang sight for the Old Win 94 models?

Any ideas as I'd really like a peep tang sight on me gun...
unless someone could convince me why not to put a tang sight on a 16" trapper... (as I heard before, but as it increases the line of sight, it can only be beneficial, right?)

Nero I have a couple of levers with peeps installed. Both are Williams FP models. I thing they are great. Very adjustable and rigid. One is a 357 mag too and like you say much fun to shoot. Just take a look at Brownells website. best of luck. POW

Tang peeps are best reserved for target rifles and range work not hunting. Sure they increase accuracy over both normal sights and receiver sights but not by enough over receiver peeps to justify the nuisance they are.

You'll find it is always in your way when wrapping your hand around the wrist of rifle stock and seems to get knocked out of position very easily. If it isn't exactly where it should be then that accuracy edge is gone. I find them more trouble than work except on a target rifle.

This one is indeed more of a target rifle, so it won't be in any rugged conditions, and will always be much cared for.
The rifle also is too 'short' to put a receiver sight on, it'll ruin the way it looks.
Trappers just don't look right with either a scope or something hanging on top of the receiver.

That's why I'd prefer the tang mounted sight, over a receiver sight.

Problem is the tang mounted safety, I was wondering how people that have gone through this before, handled that?

I'd go for a marble's sight, as thay're also windage adjustable,
But as I'm located in Belgium, cost of shipping and importing forces me to make no mistakes, Gotta order the right one from the first time.

Can anybody help me out with this?

Will a peep tang sight, made for the model 92 with tang safety, fit a Win 94 with tang safety?

I think it's about $32.95 or so. If you get one, let us know what you think of it. I'm also not a fan of tang sights, although they do look pretty cool on some rifles.

No, in fact the purpose is mainly to lengthen the line of sight, on a trapper such a thing won't be very useful.
That's also why I won't go for a reciever mounted sight, and I like the tang sights anyway over any other type of sight.

Well, I know that you prefer a tang sight, but lots of us were trying to, "convince [you] not to put a tang sight on a 16" trapper." Increasing the sight radius does have some influence on accurate shooting, that's true. However, a 16" trapper isn't really the rifle of choice for long-range precision shooting. Tang sights can injure your eye, they are more prone to damage, and the new safety makes it difficult to mount one to the rifle. You did give us the option of trying to change your mind about a tang sight

If I wanted a .357 rifle with a longer sight radius and a peep, I'd get one with a 20" barrel, and then I'd put a receiver sight on it. I'd also put a receiver sight on a trapper length rifle, if I had one, because the benefit of a tang sight is outweighed by the drawbacks, IMHO.

It's true what you say.
I won't go any further into this, as by now, I already get the general opinion on this :grin:

I'll see if I can get one imported (which, possibly, can take up to 6 months) and I'll let you know what my experiences are. And if I don't like it, I'll remember your suggestions.

I guess I'm the lone wolf here, but I have a tang on my Trapper and wouldn't have anything else. I like the longer sight radius and don't find it in my way when carrying it.

Thank God we don't all agree, this forum would have a heck of a time getting people to post.

Does your Trapper have the tang mounted safety, and if so, can you give Nero some pointers on where to get a tang sight for it, how much it costs, and how to install? Thanks for weighing in.
